The Dean of Students Office (DOS) SBU provides an incredibly varied and motivated working environment, where no day is the same. The Student Procedures Team has recently undergone a transformation at the beginning of 2023, with the introduction of a manager, two Investigation Officers, and a Training & Development Facilitator. As the team continues to develop and grow, this brand-new post is an exciting addition to the team, with the aim to share knowledge and develop expertise when leading on non-academic related investigations.

Main duties and responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity for the Senior Investigation Officer to take ownership of this new role and lead a team of Investigating Officers to implement non-academic misconduct and complaint policies (including Bullying and Harassment and Sexual Misconduct) on behalf of the Dean of Students Office, whilst developing and maintaining a specialist knowledge of their own area of responsibility within the team. You will offer advice and information to staff and students on the implementation of the University's regulations and procedures for student appeals, complaints and disciplinary matters, to ensure that appropriate support services are signposted to for all students including those with particular needs e.g. overseas and students with additional support needs.

The successful candidate will manage their own complex investigation caseload, alongside supervising the Investigation Officers. This will involve producing detailed professional investigation reports, in accordance with policy and OIA best practice timescales, and acting as Case Officer at non-academic misconduct panels and where relevant student complaint hearings. You will work collaboratively with colleagues from Student Procedures and Safeguarding and Student Wellbeing teams, Academic Schools and other SBUs across UH, Hertfordshire Students' Union, Security, the University's Police Team, and OIA.

Skills and experience required

You will have significant experience of conducting sensitive and complex investigations, including investigations of alleged sexual misconduct, and bullying & harassment. You will be able to clearly evidence your experience of presenting investigation outcomes to senior panels as well as the proven ability to write detailed, accurate and concise investigation and data analysis reports, exercising sound judgement informed by evidence.

The successful candidate will have a proven record of working within and managing a busy team, with the ability to respond effectively to a wide range of people, whilst maintaining confidentiality, impartiality and professionalism always. You will be a confident public speaker, have initiative, and be methodical, well organised and able to work under pressure.

Qualifications required

You will be educated at a minimum of degree or equivalent and/or proven relevant professional experience.

Please view the job description and person specification for a full list of the duties and essential criteria. Please attach a personal statement showing clearly how your skills and experience match the Person Specification.
