About this role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an individual to join the Essex Police Legal Department as Civil Claims Lawyer. Applications are invited from a person educated to degree level and who possesses a legal qualification with a minimum of 3 years experience in civil litigation. You will support the Civil Claims Manager with providing a comprehensive, quality legal service to Essex Police within the civil claims team.
Responsibilities
* Support the Civil Claims Manager with providing a comprehensive, quality legal service to Essex Police within the civil claims team.
* Take responsibility for your own caseload of litigated civil claims against the Chief Constable from start to finish.
* Investigate claims and provide a liability response, early identification of those claims that need to be settled, defend litigated claims where liability is in dispute including drafting defences, witness statements and interlocutory applications or engaging Counsel to do so where appropriate.
* Ensure a good working knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules and compliance with the deadlines set out therein.
Qualifications
* Educated to degree level and possess a legal qualification with a minimum of 3 years experience in civil litigation.
* Experience of dealing with contentious and complex civil claims from inception to trial.
* An excellent working knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules and its application to civil claims.
* Experience in drafting witness statements, defences and interlocutory applications.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to converse effectively across a broad spectrum of people from members of the public to Chief Officers.

Working arrangements
Essex Police offer agile working which allows some flexibility in terms of work arrangements. Due to the operational nature of this role, it will be predominantly office based within an office-based team. Some travel may be required to other police sites to discharge duty.
Salary
Essex Police offer incremental increases within this salary band, therefore the salary for this position will rise to a maximum of £54,876.00.
