Technician [track maintenance]

Manchester
Network Rail
Technician
Posted: 11 September
Offer description

Overview

Supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users. Our technician community comes from a variety of backgrounds, and this might be the first time you’ve considered a career in rail. We focus on transferable skills and behaviours and, if you can demonstrate them, we will provide the necessary training to work safely and competently on the network. If you make the grade, you can look forward to a rewarding career with a company that recently joined the top 50 in Glassdoor’s 2021 Best Places to Work.

About the role

Our technicians provide the essential link between the team leader and the team’s operatives. Technicians specialise in a range of disciplines; for this role you’ll become a specialist in Track Maintenance. Technicians work outside in all conditions, year-round, day or night. You could be involved in demanding manual work, often with the need to transport kit across challenging terrain. Being safety-focused, respectful of rules and a team player is critical as you’ll often work next to moving trains travelling at high speed.

You matter to your team. You’ll be a natural team player and, when asked by the team leader, you’ll be able to lead the team. You’ll use your skills to deliver work safely and ensure the team has the right competencies to meet strict safety standards. You’ll be a role model for safe working behaviours and be confident to challenge any potential risks so that everyone gets home safe every day.

You matter to us. Today’s technicians can become tomorrow’s team leaders. Your commitment to self-development and continuous learning is hugely important in this role, and we’ll provide training to develop both technical and non-technical skills. If you’re joining us from another industry, the structured training will equip you with the skills and confidence to move into a rewarding rail career.

Your skills matter

Our technicians play a vital role in our maintenance teams. You don’t necessarily need rail experience, but you must show how your transferable skills meet the following requirements:

* Leadership - Able to lead, motivate and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery.
* Effective communicator - Strong communication skills to deliver clear instructions to the team and other colleagues.
* Technical skills - Knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques in the discipline you are applying for.
* Safety - Consistently model safe behaviours; arrange and implement safe systems of work; confident to challenge if a situation is unsafe.
* Problem solver - Persistent in finding safe and effective solutions; continuously develop skills and keep up to date with new standards, procedures and instructions, addressing issues in the working environment.
* Willingness to learn - Continually develop skills and stay updated with standards and procedures.
* Relevant qualification - Ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 linked to the discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll help keep our nation moving every day. A critical part of the role is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As a technician you’ll work outdoors in a team, in varying conditions and shifts, including days, nights and weekends. You’ll perform required tasks to maintain the network safely and effectively.
