St John's RC Primary School Nursery

Salary: £28,046 - £32,010 (pro-rata for sessional)
Hours: 36 per week, 39 weeks sessional


Job Description

Post title: Early Years Practitioner / Nursery Nurse
Division: Special Schools, Specialist Provision and Services Division / Section Schools and Lifelong Learning / Early Years Department
Responsible To: Head Teacher/Head of Centre/Business Manager


Purpose of Job

To provide a service aligned with good practice in education and care of children and young people, following policies set by the Council, Education Department, and Care Inspectorate. To work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, promoting a stimulating environment that balances education and care, meeting individual needs of children and their families, and supporting their development and potential. To establish positive relationships with children, young people, staff, and parents.


Major Tasks

* Deliver effective education and care services according to council policies.
* Build strong relationships with children, young people, staff, and parents.
* Assist in programs for children with additional support needs and evaluate their effectiveness.
* Create a supportive ethos encouraging self-esteem, confidence, and respect.
* Provide a challenging and stimulating environment for children to reach their potential.


Job Activities

* Act as a key worker for designated children, ensuring their comfort, security, and developmental opportunities.
* Work closely with parents/carers, respecting family circumstances.
* Develop developmental profiles using observations and assessments, sharing with parents and colleagues.
* Communicate regularly with parents about progress.
* Support children’s ICT use and prepare resources accordingly.
* Undertake routine administrative tasks and manage resources.
* Address additional support needs, implementing individual care/learning plans.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and handle children with physical disabilities or challenging behaviors.
* Promote social inclusion, diversity, and language development.
* Assist with setting up and maintaining indoor and outdoor play areas and equipment.
* Contribute to meal preparation and supervise mealtimes, considering emotional and social development opportunities.
* Engage in wider parental work and provide comfort and care when needed.
* Follow child protection policies and participate in staff development and training.
* Continuously update professional skills and knowledge.


Supervision and Management of People

Provide support and advice to colleagues, including volunteers and students.


Creativity and Innovation

Contribute to curriculum planning, record-keeping, and evaluations. Organize small group activities and outings following health and safety guidelines.


Contacts and Relationships

Build positive relationships with children, young people, parents, and multidisciplinary teams.


Decisions (Discretion and Consequences)

Work with parents and teams, escalating concerns to managers as needed.


Resources

Participate in resource procurement and maintenance based on children’s needs.


Work Environment

* Contribute to daily activity planning within the team.
* Perform physical tasks related to care and learning, including handling, outdoor activities, and working in noisy environments.


Knowledge and Skills

HNC Child Care and Education, SVQ Level 3, or equivalent. Registration with SSSC and compliance with PVG scheme. Understanding of health and safety, child protection, and working with vulnerable groups.


Health and Safety

Adhere to safety laws and policies, report unsafe practices, and ensure a safe environment. PVG scheme membership is mandatory. Pre-employment checks include PVG and possibly overseas criminal record checks.
