Location: Hybrid – 1 day per fortnight in the Wilmslow offices
Role
Following recent investment, Citation Group is building out its data and AI capabilities to be best in class. A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a skilled data modeller to join the data team, working closely with the Head of Data Engineering to shape how data is structured, defined, and consumed across the business. You’ll be responsible for designing and building the curated and semantic layers that sit between raw data ingestion and business consumption — the models that power self‑serve reporting, BI tooling, and emerging AI and agentic workflows. You’ll work alongside Data Engineering, BI & Reporting, Data Governance, and AI teams to implement a group‑wide data modelling strategy that is clean, documented, and trusted.
Responsibilities
* Design, build, and maintain curated data models in dbt across staging, intermediate, and mart layers
* Develop semantic layer definitions — metrics, dimensions, and business logic — that serve as a single source of truth for BI and analytics
* Translate business concepts and rules into well‑structured, reusable SQL models
* Work with Data Governance to ensure models are documented, tested, and lineage‑tracked
* Partner with BI analysts and data scientists to understand how models are consumed and iterate accordingly
* Contribute to data quality standards — writing dbt tests and flagging upstream issues
* Support the development of ontological and contextual layers that underpin agentic AI workflows
* Maintain technical documentation that makes models interpretable by both humans and AI tools
* Investigate data quality issues end‑to‑end — from model back to ingestion
The Person
We’re looking for someone who takes genuine pride in clean, well‑reasoned data structures. In addition, the successful candidate should have:
* Strong SQL skills with a deep understanding of how to model data for analytical consumption, not just extraction
* Practical experience with dbt — writing models, tests, documentation, and managing a project structure
* Ability to translate business logic and organisational rules into data model design
* Experience building curated or semantic layers — star schemas or similar
* Excellent communication skills — able to work closely with non‑technical stakeholders to understand and codify their data needs
* Outstanding attention to detail and a systematic approach to data quality
* Programming experience in Python
Desired Skills
* Experience with Snowflake or similar cloud data warehouses
* Familiarity with BI tools and how semantic/metric layers integrate with them (e.g. Omni, Tableau, Looker)
* Exposure to AI‑assisted development tools (Claude, Cursor, etc.) and how LLMs interact with structured data layers
* Experience working in an agile environment
* Knowledge of data governance principles — cataloguing, lineage, ownership
* Familiarity with orchestration concepts — DAG dependencies, scheduling, and how modelling fits into a broader pipeline (dbt Cloud, Dagster, or similar)
* Basic understanding of Airbyte or similar ingestion tools
Benefits
Access to 25 days holiday, plus your birthday off work, gym membership discount, healthcare, childcare vouchers, the opportunity to purchase extra leave, pension contributions and more.
