Job summary
We are recruiting for a Non-Executive Director to serve on the Board at Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. This is an excellent opportunity to share your expertise and skills to make a positive difference to the communities we serve.
The Non-Executive Director will work with the Chair and other colleagues as a voting member of the Board, and in partnership with the Assembly of Governors, who hold the Directors to account for the Board's performance.
Main duties of the job
You will need a genuine commitment to patients and high-quality care for all service users. You should be passionate about representing the needs of diverse communities across the Black Country.
We are seeking a person with:
* Strategic Leadership Experience: Proven ability to develop and oversee organisational strategy, preferably within complex or regulated environments such as healthcare or public service.
* Commitment to Public Service Values: Strong understanding of NHS values, including equity, accountability, and improving outcomes for diverse communities.
* Governance and Risk Oversight: Experience in holding executive teams accountable through effective challenge, with knowledge of governance, financial stewardship, and risk management.
* Independence and Constructive Challenge: Confidence and integrity to question and influence constructively, maintaining positive relationships with board members and stakeholders.
The time commitment is approximately 3 to 4 days per month.
About us
Our Trust was established on 1 April 2020 through the merger of Black Country Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Dudley and Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust. We provide specialist mental health, learning disability, and community healthcare services for a population of 1.26 million across the Black Country, operating from about 50 sites including inpatient hospitals and community settings.
In July 2022, we became the lead provider/commissioner for mental health, learning disabilities, and autism services in the Black Country. We work closely with local authorities, NHS partners, and community organizations to co-design and deliver services.

Job responsibilities
The Non-Executive Director provides independent judgment, advice, and guidance, supporting the Chair and Directors on strategy, performance, governance, and risk management. Responsibilities include:
* Upholding high standards of probity, integrity, and governance, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements.
* Providing independent advice on strategy, vision, and performance, and challenging constructively.
* Monitoring management performance and conduct, including statutory duties like annual reports and accounts.
* Ensuring financial information and quality and safety data are accurate and systems are robust.
* Contributing to remuneration decisions for senior staff.
* Participating in or chairing Trust committees and supporting senior executives.
* Applying independent judgment from outside the Trust for the benefit of stakeholders and the community.
* Supporting the setting of strategic aims, resource allocation, and performance monitoring.
* Engaging positively with stakeholders and acting as a Trust ambassador.
