Overview
Our client is a well-established automation machinery manufacturer based in Derby, delivering bespoke and high-performance automated solutions to a global customer base. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer with strong Siemens TIA Portal expertise to support the design, development, and commissioning of advanced automated machinery.
Key Responsibilities
* Design, develop, and maintain PLC and HMI software using Siemens TIA Portal (TIA Portal V15+ preferred)
* Develop control system architectures for bespoke automated machinery
* Produce functional design specifications and software documentation
* Configure and integrate safety systems, drives, servos, and motion control
* Commission machinery both in-house and at customer sites (UK and occasional international travel)
* Fault-find, diagnose, and resolve control system issues during build and post-installation
* Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and project engineering teams
* Support continuous improvement and standardisation of control software
Essential Skills & Experience
* Proven experience as a Controls / Automation Engineer within machinery or industrial automation
* Strong hands-on experience with Siemens PLCs (S7-1200 / S7-1500)
* Proficient in TIA Portal for PLC, HMI, and hardware configuration
* Experience with industrial networks (Profinet, Profibus)
* Good understanding of electrical control panels and machine safety standards
* Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics
* Strong fault-finding and commissioning skills
* Right to work in the UK
Desirable Skills & Experience
* Experience with Siemens HMIs (WinCC)
* Knowledge of servo drives and motion control systems
* Familiarity with safety PLCs and safety standards (e.g. ISO 13849, IEC 62061)
* Experience commissioning bespoke or special-purpose machinery
* Background in industries such as packaging, materials handling, robotics, or process automation
