Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Water Industry
We are recruiting a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our dynamic Water Consultancy team across the UK. The role involves leading mechanical design work on AMP8 and AMP9 projects, delivering solutions for water and wastewater systems.
About the Team
Our team of engineers, designers, modellers and data analysts support UK water industry clients in asset management and operational strategy. The work spans urban drainage, water quality modelling, and full design packages from feasibility to detailed design.
About You
* Experience liaising with clients, interpreting data, and developing project plans.
* Competent in producing technical outputs: specifications, schedules, reports, pump and aeration system design.
* Skilled in generating general arrangement drawings, 3‑D models, P&IDs, and other design deliverables.
* Strong communication and presentation skills; able to contribute to workshops, safety reviews, HAZOPs and ALMs.
* Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes and assessment of existing infrastructure.
Your Responsibilities
* Manage workload across multiple long‑term projects with water companies and contractors in the UK.
* Achieve positive outcomes for projects and the communities they serve.
* Collaborate with senior engineers and stakeholders to deliver outcomes.
* Mentor less experienced team members and provide technical governance.
* Interpret and supervise technical drawings; proficient in AutoCAD and/or Inventor.
* Conduct asset condition surveys and prepare reports/recommendations.
* Produce P&IDs and other design deliverables: calculations, reports, specifications, datasheets, schedules, procurement documents.
* Support compliance with CDM Designer duties, including risk assessments.
* Maintain quality assurance systems and standards.
* Act as project manager or design team leader as required.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
* Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals.
* Significant water industry experience.
* Proficiency in pump selection and pumping system design.
* Ability to create equipment, valve and pipe schedules using P&IDs.
* Experience producing specifications, reports and technical documentation.
* Understanding of CDM regulations and design for safety.
* Knowledge of NEC procurement and contract engagement.
* Time, cost and quality management.
* Support for junior staff development.
* Travel to sites for surveys, inspections and testing.
* AutoCAD or similar design package proficiency is advantageous.
Qualifications
* Degree‑level qualification in mechanical engineering or a closely‑related subject (preferably IMechE accredited).
* Postgraduate qualifications are an advantage.
* Chartered engineer status or on track to chartership.
