As a Payroll Administrator, you will play a key role in supporting weekly payroll processing within a complex, high-volume environment. Working closely with the Payroll Manager, Finance, HR, and external payroll providers, you will take ownership of core payroll administration activities, act as the first point of contact for payroll queries and help ensure payroll operations run smoothly during both business-as-usual and peak periods.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone who is organised, detail-focused, and comfortable working to strict deadlines while managing multiple priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Support the accurate and timely processing of weekly payroll in a high-volume environment
Maintain and update payroll records, ensuring pay rates, hours, deductions, and changes are accurately reflected
Calculate and process statutory payments, including SSP, SMP, and other statutory entitlements
Act as a first-line contact for payroll queries, investigating and resolving discrepancies promptly and escalating where appropriate
Assist Finance with payroll reconciliations, journals, and reporting
Ensure ongoing compliance with HMRC regulations, pensions, and internal payroll policies
Support HR with new starters, leavers, contractual changes, and pay amendments
Liaise with external payroll providers to ensure accurate data exchange and timely issue resolution
Always maintain strict confidentiality and data security
Contribute to continuous improvement of payroll processes, controls, and documentation
What Were Looking For Previous experience in a payroll administration role, ideally within a high-volume or deadline-driven environment
Strong attention to detail with a high level of accuracy
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work calmly under pressure
Good understanding of statutory payments, pensions, and HMRC requirements
Confident Excel skills (including lookups, reconciliations, and data validation)
Experience using payroll systems and working with payroll data
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
A proactive approach with willingness to take ownership and learn
