Public Affairs Manager, Northern Ireland Closing date: 28th Sept 2025 Job Title: Public Affairs Manager (Northern Ireland) Reporting To: Head of Public Affairs and Campaigns Role Purpose: To help develop and implement the Royal British Legions public/external affairs activities in NorthernIrelandatboththenationalandlocallevel;toadvisecolleaguesonpoliticaldevelopments of importance to RBLs operations in Northern Ireland; to manage relationships with external stakeholders; and to aid in the establishment of a supporter network in Northern Ireland. KeyResponsibilities: To assist the Head of Public Affairs and Campaigns with the development of a Public/External Affairs engagement programme for Northern Ireland and manage its day-to-day implementation through a combination of regular events, meetings, briefings, and attendance at conferences, including party conferences. To develop and maintain good working relationships with key members of the Northern Ire- land Assembly, NI MPs and their staff, Veterans Champions, as well as Committees and All Party Groups, and other related national stakeholders, including think tanks and trade unions as appropriate. To develop and lead RBLs relationships with key local stakeholders and partners, including engagement with local councils, Health & Social Care Trusts, the Housing Executive, NI Veterans Commissioners Office and NI Veterans Welfare Service and other public bodies in Northern Ireland, and providing RBL representation on external public affairs and public pol- icy bodies including Government groups, and Armed Forces and veterans forums. To routinely monitor the Northern Ireland Assemblys business and Northern Ireland Government activity, including but not limited to the passage of legislation, and identify any areas of concern and opportunities to influence, producing high-quality reports and consultation sub- missions, in collaboration with Services and Campaigns, Policy & Research (CPR) col- leagues. To lead on the production of external briefings for Northern Ireland Assembly debates and local council business, as well as internal briefings for colleagues, as required. Coordinate and communicate information to share with veterans champions, local councillors, MLAs and MPs about issues veterans and their families in Northern Ireland approach RBL about. Be present at meetings where issues and policy changes affecting the Armed Forces com- munity in Northern Ireland are discussed. Ensure that the views and perspectives of veterans in Northern Ireland are represented when RBL is discussing issues affecting all veterans. To develop content for public facing communications in Northern Ireland, including website, intranet, email and social media, and advise regional PR colleagues on appropriate responses to press enquiries. To assist the Head of Public Affairs and Campaigns in developing a supporter network, and work with colleagues to implement supporter engagement strategies. To work closely and effectively with colleagues in Campaigns, Policy & Research to ensure RBL is a leading organisation in facilitating evidence-based policy change, through working together to influence policy professionals and decision-makers. To assist the Head of Public Affairs and Campaigns with budget preparation and business planning relating to public affairs and campaigns activity. To support colleagues in Northern Ireland in advancing beneficiary cases where engagement with local and national politicians and/or officials is required or would be beneficial. To build credibility among the Armed Forces Community by engaging regularly with beneficiaries through RBL branches, veteran and Armed Forces community support groups, and partner agencies across Northern Ireland in order to identify potential policy issues. Criteria Person Specification Knowledge&Experience Essential: Track record of delivering tangible public affairs outcomes Excellent knowledge and experience of the Northern Ireland public affairs environment and Northern Ireland Assembly politics Good knowledge and experience of the Armed Forces community in Northern Ireland Experience of engaging and mobilising supporters Skills&Attributes Essential: Ability to develop productive relationships with Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly from all political parties, the Northern Ireland Government and other decision-makers and opinion-formers Ability to analyse and interpret complex information and to brief office holders at the highest organisational levels both within and outside RBL A flexible and positive approach to problem solving, combined with the ability to act calmly in pressured situations, to prioritise heavy workloads and the patience to deal with varied and changing demands Excellent written and verbal communication skills with innovative and fresh ideas for communicating to our target audiences through electronic, print and face to face Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work alone and within a team, and to engage with diverse client groups and audiences Empathy with mission, objectives and values of RBL Strong IT skills and competence using MS Office and social media Our Values In September 2025, we introduced our new company values, which now sit at the heart of everything we do as individuals and as an organisation.
