The Role
We are seeking a highly organised, disciplined, and motivational School Sergeant Major to lead the ceremonial and military aspects of school life. This is a non-teaching position and plays a critical role in maintaining the schools traditions, supporting pupils in leadership and discipline, and upholding the values and standards that define the schools military heritage.
This role sits at the heart of the schools ceremonial programme and is integral to maintaining its national reputation for excellence in drill, parades, and formal events.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead, organise, and oversee the schools ceremonial activities, including Parade Sundays and major school events.
* Train and mentor pupils in drill, discipline, bearing, and ceremonial conduct.
* Work closely with staff overseeing the pipe band, drumming, and Highland dancing teams.
* Uphold and promote the schools military ethos and heritage in daily school life.
* Coordinate with senior leadership to support the smooth running of events, inspections, and ceremonial duties.
* Serve as a visible role model for discipline, respect, leadership, and tradition.
* Assist with pastoral and community responsibilities typical of a boarding school environment.
* Ensure health, safety, and safeguarding standards are upheld at all times.
Requirements
* Strong military or cadet force background (e.g., NCO, WO2/WO1, Drill Instructor, or similar experience).
* Demonstrable experience in drill, ceremonial duties, or military leadership.
* Excellent communication, authority, and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to motivate and guide young people in both discipline and confidence.
* Strong organisational skills and comfort working in a structured, tradition-driven environment.
* Willingness to support the wider boarding and extracurricular life of the school.
