Overview
The Supply Chain Manager role is focused on all aspects of product supply and supplier development, including ownership of the Supplier Management Process, the SLS Brand Strategy and Product Range Development. The role is responsible for developing and executing sourcing strategies to ensure the timely and cost-effective acquisition of scientific products, equipment, and services. This role involves supplier evaluation, contract negotiation, compliance management, and collaboration with internal stakeholders to meet operational and strategic goals.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Procurement
* Develop and implement procurement strategies aligned with business objectives.
* Lead and coordinate all Supplier Management and Product Range Development activity jointly with Business Managers, General Manager Sales Development and Technical Sales Specialists, effectively present range developments (new products) to the Sales Team.
* Ensure validation and financial sign off for all range development involving monetary investment (stock etc.).
* Conduct market research to identify cost-saving opportunities and supplier innovations.
* Attend exhibitions and events as required to ensure continuity to market of new products and trends.
* Source, evaluate, and onboard suppliers of scientific equipment, chemicals and consumables.
* Negotiate contracts and maintain supplier relationships to ensure quality and reliability.
* Monitor supplier performance and compliance with ISO and MHRA standards.
* Define and implement a robust supplier management process to ensure the best performance of suppliers (driving improved service levels and cost price reductions).
* Ensure growth of the SLS Supplier Rebate Scheme to generate targeted year-on-year increases in the levels of rebate payable.
* In conjunction with the marketing group, define, implement and manage an effective “Own-Brand” Strategy. Ownership of the SLS Brand Strategy includes coordinating and delivering regular updates to the Business (in collaboration with the Business Managers, General Manager Sales Development and Technical Sales Specialists).
* Work closely with the Inventory Manager and team to ensure supplier compliance.
Sustainability
* Work closely with the Sustainability Manager to ensure suppliers meet sustainability targets and measurements across governance and compliance, social responsibility, and environmental sustainability.
* Supporting supplier alignment with ESG policies and ethical standards.
* Monitoring and reporting on supplier performance against environmental KPIs.
* Ensuring suppliers uphold fair labour practices and community engagement.
* Facilitating audits, certifications, and continuous improvement initiatives.
* Promoting transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain.
Contract & Compliance
* Incorporate our supplier management activity into the CRM/SRM System for effective sharing of Supply-End information around the business.
* Manage tendering processes and contract preparation.
* Ensure procurement activities comply with UK/EU regulations and ethical standards.
* Maintain accurate procurement documentation for audits and reporting.
* Promote continuous improvement and professional development within the team.
Reporting & Analysis
* Analyse procurement data to identify trends and improve performance.
* Report on savings, supplier performance, and procurement KPIs.
* Collaborate with finance to manage budgets and cost controls.
The ideal candidate
* Strong understanding of the end-to-end Supply Chain process.
* Strong negotiation and contract management skills.
* Experience in ethical sourcing, sustainability practices and regulatory awareness.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
* Proficiency in procurement systems.
* Analytical mindset with attention to detail.
* Significant knowledge and experience of a reseller / distribution environment with either the public or private sectors.
* Strong understanding of scientific product categories and supply chain dynamics.
* Understanding of logistics and hazardous material handling.
* Manage change within procurement and work with people of all levels and skill sets.
* Adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
* Can demonstrate resilience and have a flexible attitude to deliver change within a dynamic and changing work environment.
* Office 365 and General IT Competency.
* Keen to maintain and raise the profile of Purchasing through digital transformation.
* Well-developed and effective verbal, written, presentation and interpersonal communication skills, in both formal and informal situations.
* Degree in Supply Chain, Business, or related field; Fellow or member of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply or working towards.
