* Grade: Business Support Grade 9 (£60,001 per annum)
* Responsible to: Deputy Director of AI and Technology Research Services
* Contract: Fixed-Term until 31st August 2028 / Full-time
Job Purpose:
The Artificial Intelligence Collaboration Centre (AICC) is a £16.3M investment by InvestNI and the Department for the Economy to create a partnership between Ulster University and Queen's University based predominantly in Belfast and Derry/Londonderry.
The AICC has the aim of increasing the use of AI by local companies in Northern Ireland by collaborating on a series of applied technology projects. It offers an exciting opportunity for the successful candidates to help lead a world class team delivering real-world value from AI and engaging with a wide range of academics involved in applying AI in their research and with industry.
As a Principal AI Engineer in the AICC team, you will work with the AICC Research Lead to develop the skills and experience of the full team of AI/ML engineers. You provide day to day leadership for the team, specifically around framing and delivering collaborative research and development efforts with companies across wide areas of AI, ML & Data Science.
Main Duties
1. Work closely with the AICC leadership team, including the Deputy Director of Technology and AI Research Services and the Director (CEO), to develop and implement the AICC Operational Plan and deliver against agreed objectives and KPIs.
2. Provide day-to-day leadership and direct line management to the team of Data Scientists and Applied AI Researchers within the AICC, ensuring effective performance management, mentorship and professional development.
3. Provide matrix style technical guidance and oversight to University based AI Specialists and Researchers contributing to AICC projects.
4. Identify, define, scope and lead the delivery of collaborative AI/ML research and development projects with industry partners, ensuring outputs are innovative, technically robust and commercially impactful.
5. Engage and collaborate with industry professionals, researchers, and stakeholders to exchange ideas, share knowledge and explore the application of AI across diverse sectors, showcasing its capabilities.
6. Partner with companies to assess their readiness for AI adoption, identify opportunities for AI-driven improvements and define proof-of-concept or applied research projects to address their needs.
7. Lead the preparation and execution of agile quarterly project delivery plans, ensuring timely achievement of milestones and alignment with AICC objectives.
8. Contribute to the design, development, and oversight of advanced AI training content, ensuring alignment with emerging technologies, responding to industry demand and best practice.
9. Oversee and contribute to the delivery of industry training programmes, both in-person and virtually, guiding participants through practical and hands on activities.
10. Monitor developments in AI, ML, and data science technologies, assessing their relevance to AICC’s mission and incorporating them into projects and training where appropriate.
11. Prepare and present reports, technical papers, and project updates to AICC management, advisory boards and external stakeholders.
12. Represent the AICC at regional, national, and international conferences, workshops, and industry events to promote the Centre’s expertise and capabilities.
13. Support the marketing and promotion of AICC activities, including the dissemination of case studies, success stories and technical insights.
14. Develop and maintain productive internal and external relationships, fostering networks across academia, industry and government to enhance AICC’s reach and reputation.
15. Contribute to the strategic development of the AICC, identifying opportunities for growth, innovation and long term sustainability.
16. Provide advice on the prioritisation and management of resources within the AICC, ensuring high-quality outputs are delivered on time and within budget.
17. Demonstrate commitment to continuing professional development to maintain and grow skills relevant to the role.
18. Be prepared to travel as required, including periods working on-site with collaborating partners.
19. Adopt a flexible, collaborative approach to duties, contributing to wider AICC activities as needed.
20. Perform any other duties appropriate to the grade and nature of the post.
