Roles Available in Location: Barnard Castle, Stevenage

Education required: To apply for this placement, you must be:

Currently studying an Undergraduate Degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Building Services Engineering

Please read the degree requirements for each role carefully before applying.

Other requirements: You will have completed a minimum of 2 years of your undergraduate degree but will not have graduated at the start of your placement. You must be enrolled at a UK (United Kingdom) or ROI (Republic of Ireland) University for the duration of your placement.

If you have already graduated with a bachelor’s degree and are currently studying a postgraduate Masters, you are not eligible for this programme.

Language requirement: Written and spoken fluency in English

Expected Start date: June 2026

Duration: 1 year (approximately)

Salary: A salary of £25,400 plus a bonus.

Workplace Arrangements: Full time onsite required

The Roles (2 Available)

This advert contains multiple roles. Please read each role carefully before proceeding as you will be asked to provide a preference later in the application process.

Role 1 - Facilities Engineering - Barnard Castle

Degree requirements: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering

Overview of the Department

Barnard Castle is a key secondary site for GSK with a large number of New Products coming through development at site. We manufacture and supply a wide range of pharmaceutical products and have recently opened a new aseptic digital facility producing biopharmaceuticals.

This role provides an opportunity to work with an experienced automation engineering team and digital technology teams to deliver capital projects within a highly regulated environment.

Key Placement Learnings

* Assist the site team with automation capital project delivery for new equipment and digital systems.

* Provide business system support to front line teams for new systems.

* Upgrade existing platforms and support cyber security upgrades.

* Collaborate with digital technology teams to deliver machine integration to cloud data analytics platforms.

* Develop skills with automation systems (PLCs, HMIs, DCS, SCADA) and related communication and MES.

Role 2 - Facilities Engineering – Stevenage

Degree requirements: Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Engineering, Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering.

Overview: R&D Engineering Services provides facilities management, engineering and capital project services for Research & Development. The team supports 13,000 people across 14 sites in 6 countries with a budget over £400m per annum.

The placement sits within R&D Engineering Services Global and Europe teams, focusing on engineering standards & compliance, lifecycle asset management, energy & sustainability, capital planning & processes, and cross-departmental projects.

You will work with a multi-disciplinary team and be mentored throughout the year. Projects may include installation, calibration, cyber security and environmental work to support GSK's 2030 targets.

Key Placement Learnings

* Hands-on application of university theory to site equipment, plant and processes.

* Utilise specialist engineering software.

* Replace and improve existing systems and processes on site.

* Support delivery of Engineering, Inspection and Reliability programmes.

* Investigate new engineering technologies to improve plant and maintenance techniques.

* Develop maintenance best practices and specify new equipment.

* Conduct root cause analyses and contribute to safety and quality risk assessments.

* Carry out continuous improvement activities and lead groups of peers or contractors where appropriate.

* Develop project management and planning skills.
