Additional allowances will be paid based on rostered hours. The Trust is compliant with the European Working Time Directive.
This is a 12‑month post starting August 2026, open to all post‑Primary FRCA (or equivalent) anaesthetic trainees who wish to develop a further interest in peri‑operative care.
Rota will be amended for education commitments; time will be dedicated to staff training, education and peri‑operative projects, with the remainder allocated to clinical commitment and on‑call requirements. The post is suitable for a CT3/CT3+ equivalent level trainee with full on‑call commitment expected.
Main Duties of the Job
Post aims:
* Develop in‑depth knowledge of optimal peri‑operative management of complex patients.
* Demonstrate QI and research capability skills.
* Contribute towards a business case and service development for peri‑operative medicine at the Trust.
* Contribute to an impact‑driven research project related to key Trust priorities.
* Register and complete a PG cert in healthcare leadership and commissioning.
By the end of the year the Fellow will have:
* Gained broad experience working in a multi‑disciplinary peri‑operative team, including development of leadership skills, person‑centred goal‑orientated decision‑making, risk stratification and clinical use of risk scores.
* Attended pre‑operative high‑risk clinics and CPET, with attendance at relevant courses.
* Undergone research and QI training from project inception to manuscript submission and presentation at an international conference.
* Gained insight and contributed to a business case at the Trust.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
Peri‑operative medicine is a growing field responding to the increasing complexity of patients undergoing elective and emergency surgery. The post is split into clinical work, service development, QI and research, supervised by two experienced clinicians. The Fellow will work under Dr Luke Hodgson, Consultant in Intensive Care and Peri‑operative Medicine, and will have the opportunity to perform clinically applicable research and QI while continuing clinical work with an individualised timetable.
Additional responsibilities include baseline data collection to inform service and impact assessment, leading projects such as a peri‑operative enhanced recovery proforma for emergency laparotomies and an observational study using smartwatch technology to observe recovery following such presentations.
Person Specification
Experience / Qualifications
* Completed at least two years postgraduate training at CT1 and CT2 level in a relevant training programme.
* Full GMC registration with a licence to practice.
* Advanced life support certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent.
* Completion of Initial Assessment of Competence (IAC) and Initial Assessment of Competence for obstetric anaesthesia (IACOA).

* Possesses a range of clinical knowledge, skills and IT expertise.
* Understanding of clinical risk management.
Knowledge
* Breadth of experience in and outside specialty.
