The Positioning & Communications Lead is responsible for leading the development and implementation of positioning & communications solutions for Sonardyne. This includes leading a team of engineers and scientists in the design, testing, and deployment of new technologies. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of underwater acoustic principles and technologies, as well as experience in leading and managing complex projects.

As part of the engineering & technology leadership team, you will formulate the strategy for both maintaining and growing Sonardyne’s market share. The strategy will be developed in collaboration with product managers. The key output is the successful launch of the next generation of Sonardyne’s positioning and communications product that are robust, easy to use, secure and interoperable.

The candidate will be steering and contribute to the design and development of advanced subsea communications and positioning devices. A minimum of 5 years’ experience in underwater acoustic systems is essential with a strong scientific or engineering educational background.

Sonardyne operates a matrix engineering structure, and you will be required to liaise with the senior management, product managers and executive team to ensure internal developments are aligned to external programs.


Responsibilities


Technical Ownership

* Creating a technology strategy in conjunction with key engineering members for the development of acoustic positioning systems that utilise technics such as USBL and LBL
* Lead and steer the development of products / features, utilising and working with a multi-discipline team.
* The creation or guidance in the creation of suitable models to enhance product development.
* Assist NPI teams to streamline production processes to provide high quality repeatable products.
* Interact with customers and stakeholders to gather requirements.


Embedded Systems

* Defining and maintaining embedded architecture, system design, and technology in close co-operation with software developers, analysts and HW engineers.
* Identify where existing code libraries can reused and where new shared libraries can be created due to novel development.
* Define DevOps methodologies to enhance productivity across teams.
* Working to investigate challenging and complex bugs, both in assistance to more junior members and directly with customers.
* Data analysis to understand component, product and system performance.
* Stay up to date on the latest acoustic navigation and communications technologies.
* Ensure alignment to the vision and mission statements.
* Identifying and evaluating new technologies.
* Prepare regular technical reports and presentation for the engineering, leadership teams and customers.
* Mentor and guide other team members within engineering and the consortium.
* Occasionally represent Sonardyne and present capabilities or developments at technology reviews, engineering events or conferences.
* Represent Sonardyne on a technical basis alongside management/sales/business development to a customer.


Skills and Expertise

* Embedded architecture and system design - Able to capture the requirements from the domain experts and define a suitable system architecture, utilising available technologies where appropriate.
* Programming C/C++ - Able to code well in their area of speciality, understands programming of large software systems in teams of engineers and writing object-oriented code.
* An understanding of acoustic navigation - Demonstrated understanding of acoustic navigation and methods.
* Documentation - Can create requirements documentation for software, hardware and systems. Can produce technical reports and presentations.
* Dev Ops - Understands and can manage the entire software life cycle; templates, coding standards, source control, tool chains, feature tracking, dependence management, automated testing, release package management etc.
* Upper Degree in Engineering, Science or Mathematics.
* An understanding of underwater acoustic principles.
* Strong analytical skills including math.
* Proven 5+ years of relevant embedded systems engineering work. 2+ in combination with exceptional skill/talent.
* USBL and LBL system design.
* Use of Linux RT embedded applications.
* Project and program management.
* Budget management.
