Ward 15 is the designated Vascular Specialist Hub for the North & Central Lancashire region, located at the heart of Preston Hospital. Our 15-bed unit is dedicated to providing high-quality care for patients with both acute and chronic vascular conditions, offering comprehensive diagnostics, pre- and post-operative treatment, patient education, and ongoing support.

Main duties of the job

Are you a compassionate, motivated nurse ready to grow in a dynamic surgical setting? We’re looking for a dedicated Staff Nurse to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care in our Vascular Surgery team.

Your Role:

5. Administer medications and manage wound care
6. Deliver holistic care and support discharge planning
7. Care for patients post-vascular critical care, including those with epidurals
8. Apply advanced therapies (VAC, larvae, complex dressings)
9. Mentor student nurses and support learning

What You’ll Need:

10. NMC-registered Nurse
11. Flexible with shifts (including nights/weekends)
12. Committed to professional development
13. Surgical/acute care experience (desirable)
14. Willingness to train in vascular care

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

15. Contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care in alignment with local and national standards, as well as evidence-based guidelines, under appropriate supervision.

16. Support and deliver patient education and health promotion initiatives, empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.

17. Assist in the coordination and delivery of high-quality care, ensuring professional standards are upheld throughout the patient journey.

18. Participate in risk management activities and uphold patient safety by adhering to all relevant health, safety, and security legislation, policies, and procedures.

19. Support the development, monitoring, and maintenance of care standards to enhance patient experience and improve clinical outcomes.

20. Ensure effective communication of relevant information within the multidisciplinary team and with external partners to facilitate seamless, integrated care.

21. Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation of all care activities in accordance with local and professional standards.

22. Act as a positive role model, demonstrating professionalism and promoting the values of the team and organisation.

23. Promote inclusive and equitable care, respecting and responding to the diverse needs, preferences, and choices of individuals.

24. Ensure the care environment is safe, well-maintained, and compliant with hygiene and cleanliness standards.

25. Take responsibility for ongoing professional development, maintaining competence and skills within the scope of the role.

26. Engage actively in the appraisal and personal development planning process, contributing to continuous improvement.

27. Support the implementation of Trust-wide and local initiatives aimed at enhancing nursing practice, such as intentional rounding and alcohol screening.

28. Address concerns and complaints proactively at a local level, escalating appropriately and reporting outcomes to the line manager.

Person specification

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

29. Willing to expand clinical role eg IV additives, venepuncture and cannulation
30. Awareness of changes within Nursing practice
31. Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
32. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
33. Demonstrates competency during internship

Desirable criteria

34. Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality eg surgery
35. Knowledge of Leadership and Management
36. Research and Development
37. Knowledge of ethical issues

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria

38. Appropriate NMC Registration
39. Diploma in Nursing
40. NMC recognised Mentorship qualification or willingness to work towards following 18 months commencement in post
41. Evidence of continuing education or development for more experienced Band 5 nurses
