Job Purpose
To develop and deliver policy in line with the University’s ambitions to secure a more prosperous and sustainable future for Gaelic; to support the use of Gaelic among students and staff throughout the University; to raise the profile of Gaelic and Gaelic culture within the University in ways which articulate with the National Plan for Gaelic.
The University-wide role sits within University Services and the College of Arts & Humanities and will be jointly line managed by Katherine Henderson (Director of College Professional Services and College Operations) and Professor Roibeard Ó Maolalaigh (Professor of Gaelic).
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. To develop and monitor the University’s statutory Gaelic Language Plan(s) as required under the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005.
2. To manage all aspects of internal and external policy consultation and prepare a consultation summary report for submission to Bòrd na Gàidhlig.
3. To oversee the implementation of the Gaelic Language Plan providing support and guidance to all areas of the University involved in its implementation.
4. To provide information and advice on Gaelic policy and development to the Gaelic Language Committee and prepare relevant reports as required by the Committee.
5. To produce annual reports to Bòrd na Gàidhlig on the University’s progress in implementing the Gaelic Language Plan.
6. To proactively identify and develop opportunities in the policy area of Gaelic and Gaelic development which support the aims of the Universities Gaelic Language Plan.
7. To prepare funding bids and/or business cases to support Gaelic development activity annually including to secure development staff as required.
8. To recruit and line-manage development assistants as required to support Gaelic activity.
9. To organise and promote bespoke Gaelic events for the University, including Gaelic classes for staff and students, and inter-university events (nationally and internationally), Gaelic-medium schools / units – gathering and analysing feedback as appropriate.
10. To manage the Gaelic-speaking Accommodation Scheme (Taigh na Gàidhlig) in order to encourage and support students to use and develop their Gaelic within their student accommodation.
11. To adopt the role of Principal Investigator or equivalent on successful funding awards, managing and reporting on budgets as required.
12. Deliver guest lectures within the Celtic & Gaelic subject area and other areas in relation to Gaelic language policy and development.
13. To proactively forge and maintain links with external stakeholders, e.g. Glasgow City Council, Sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the Scottish Funding Council, HEIs in Scotland, Ireland and Wales, and support the partnership with University College Dublin.
14. To represent the University on external working groups, sector meetings and events as required.
15. To build the profile of UofG Gàidhlig as a stand-alone policy and development service for Gaelic in line with UofG branding, working with External Relations.
16. To oversee the effective development and management of social media platforms, working with External Relations.
17. To manage all web updates for UofG Gàidhlig using t4.
18. To contribute to media broadcasts and deliver public presentations as required.
19. To produce all PR related to the project, working with External Relations.
20. To direct units in the University to appropriate Gaelic translation services.
21. Undertake other Gaelic-related activities as requested by line managers.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Either: Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles. Or: Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related.
A2 High degree of fluency in Scottish Gaelic.
A3 Up to date detailed knowledge of Gaelic language and culture.
Desirable:
B1 Knowledge of one or more of the other modern Celtic languages and cultures.

E6 Experience in using a wide range of IT packages, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, internet / email, online meeting software.

F1 Experience of developing teaching materials and/ or curriculum design.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £41,064 - £46,049 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent).
