ABOUT THE ROLE
The opportunity to join the Professional Services Team at Northumbria University as a Campus Services Project Student Placement (Capital Works) is open to all eligible Students.
You'll gain valuable, real world experience of a diverse range of Construction Projects from the perspective of a Client Side Project Manager. You'll have the opportunity to network with Design Teams, Professional Consultants, Principal Contractors and Sub-Contractors and specialist suppliers.
You'll gain experience of working on projects at all RIBA Stages, from 0 - \"Strategic Definition\" to 7 - \"In Use\". This might inspire you when it comes to selecting a subject for your dissertation, and provide you a different perspective on the Construction Industry. It will also provide you valuable work experience when applying for permanent positions when you graduate, differentiating you from the rest of your cohort.
This placement opportunity is funded by NU:Opportunities Funding and is open to all students eligible to take a Placement Year between their second and final year for the 2024/2025 academic year. This is a one year, fixed term placement.
ABOUT THE TEAM
You'll be part of the Campus Services Planning and Development Team, based in Pandon Building at City Campus. The Planning and Development Team work with stakeholders across the University to deliver changes to the Built Environment across Campus in order to support the changing needs of the University. Projects range from Demolition Projects, through Minor and Major Refurbishments to New Build Projects, with values from £5k to £50m.
The team consists of a Director, a Capital Works Manager, Project Managers and Building Surveyors, who work closely with colleagues in Campus Services including Space Management and Planning, Sustainability, Health and Safety, and Engineering and Maintenance, supporting the Sponsor and the Academic Community to accurately and efficiently establish the brief for each project.
You'll work with colleagues in Legal and Procurement to appoint Professional Consultants to provide appropriate support on each project. You'll work with those Consultants and the internal Client to develop compliant designs that achieve their Business needs in a cost effective and efficient way.
Depending on the scale of the Project you may have to engage with a number of Statutory Authorities, including the Local Planning Authority and Conservation Teams. and statutory undertakers such as Utilities Suppliers and Highways.
Once schemes are designed and approved by the Stakeholders you'll work with colleagues in Legal and Procurement to identify the most appropriate route to market and hence appoint Contractors to deliver the project.
Once appointed, you'll work with the Contractors and their supply chain partners to ensure that the works are carried out safely, without undue disruption to the University and to the agreed quality standards, and within the agreed budget and programme.
You'll work with more Senior members of the Team to provide Stakeholders with regular updates on Projects, providing collateral for them to make informed decisions in a timely manner if circumstances change or opportunities arise.
As projects progress you'll work with colleagues across the University, including Timetabling, IT and Facilities Management, as well as the Client, as part of the Soft Landings Process to ensure that the facilities are adopted in to the Business as Usual of the University quickly and efficiently.
You'll work with the Design Team, Professional Consultants, Contractors, Specialist Suppliers and the Statutory Authorities to ensure there us a detailed and project specific Health and Safety File and Operations and Maintenance Manual, and a set of As Built Information which you'll share with colleagues.
You'd be expected to work in the Office, attend meetings with Stakeholders across Campus, attend meetings with Design Teams and other Professional Advisors, often at their Offices, and visit Construction Sites across the University Estate.

To be successful in the role you will be a enthusiastic, proactive project management or building surveying student with good communication, organisation and problem solving skills.
