Detailed job description and main responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Management

1.1. Assist the MR Section Lead in the planning, provision and development of MR services in the region, and elsewhere if appropriate.

1.2. Participate in the Quality Management System for the MR Section.

1.3. Assist the Section Lead in collaborating with radiology managers and other staff within Trusts across the North West in the development of business cases, service specifications and equipment and software specifications for new facilities and services.

1.4. Supervise and train less experienced staff (assistants, associates, practitioners and scientists) as required and appropriate.

1.5. Supervise and direct the work of trainee clinical scientists involved in MR Section.

Magnetic resonance imaging

2.1. Provide scientific advice and support to clinical magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy.

2.2. Take a particular lead in certain areas of the scientific support as defined by the MR Section Lead. Some aspects of this role will require occasional travel throughout the UK to provide the necessary support.

2.3. Collaborate and liaise with clinical colleagues and other professionals working within the field of MR both locally, nationally and internationally where appropriate.

2.4. Provide safety advice to magnetic resonance imaging and contribute to the MR Section's role of Magnetic Resonance Safety Expert (MRSE) to the clinical sites which the MR Section supports.

2.5. Provide advice on the design, construction and operation of MR facilities, and specifically advise on the safety implications for these facilities.

2.6. Assist in the provision of specifications for MR systems, applications packages and related equipment and collaborate closely with sites acquiring new MR systems to ensure optimum and effective purchase decisions.

2.7. Provide safety advice relating to specific patients with respect to the MR safety of various implanted medical devices.

2.8. Undertake analysis and interpretation of MR data for individual patients and provide patient related reports and data/results generated as part of the scientific support to routine clinical service.

2.9. Contribute to the prescription of non-routine specialised MR procedures for individual patients and specific patient groups as required at the MR departments supported by the MR Section.

Research

3.1. Liaise with the MR Section Lead in the identification of areas of research appropriate to MR service development and improvement in the delivery of clinical services.

3.2. Seek to identify and exploit innovation to achieve improved clinical outcomes and increased value for money in MR services.

3.3. Present results via written scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and oral presentation at approved scientific meetings.

3.4. Contribute to evaluation of the scientific and medical literature to identify results of published research in imaging and MR in particular which could have relevance for the delivery of clinical and scientific services and develop evidence and quality-based programmes to implement such developments.

3.5. Contribute to dissemination of information on new methodologies and techniques in MR imaging to other appropriate research groups.

3.6. Contribute to the provision of scientific support to advanced MR techniques.

3.7. Work with the MR Section Lead to maintain all the requirements of Research Governance.

Teaching and training

4.1. Take part in the training of staff in safety issues pertinent to the MR environment where necessary and ensure that the relevant MR safety guidelines are adhered to.

4.2. Contribute to various teaching commitments, formally and informally at universities and institutions relating to the education of radiologists, radiographers and scientists involved in MR.

4.3. Assist in the training of clinical scientists and trainee physicists undertaking placements in MR.

Professional

5.1. Undertake continuing professional development in compliance with the requirements for registration of The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), maintain a professional portfolio and have a commitment to the training and development of other professional colleagues.

5.2. Participate in mandatory study days.

5.3. Identify any training needs to the MR Section Lead.

5.4. Participate in training courses as required by the MR Section Lead.

5.5. Keep abreast of developments and maintain in-depth knowledge in techniques, legislation and good practice relating to MR.

5.6. Demonstrates the agreed set of values and accountable for own attitude and behaviour

NOTE

This job description indicates the duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to meet the present needs of the service. Since from time to time these needs may change it is necessary to recognise that the post holder must be willing to undertake other and/or different duties that may, after discussion, be assigned by the MR Section Lead.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
* State Registered Clinical Scientist (or working towards registration)
* Honours degree in an appropriate physical science
* Higher degree in medical physics (MSc or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
* PhD or equivalent evidence of research training
* Corporate membership of IPEM or other equivalent professional body
* Certification as MR Safety Expert (MRSE) or working towards this
Experience

Essential criteria
* Significant experience in Medical Physics with the majority in magnetic resonance
Desirable criteria
* Supervision of students and trainees
* Sufficient knowledge and experience in clinical MR to act in the capacity of MRSE
Skills

Essential criteria
* Good interpersonal skills
* Clear and articulate communicator
* Teaching aptitude to communicate complex MR physics principles at a range of levels to varying staff groups
Desirable criteria
* Effective collaboration with other organisations.
Knowledge

Essential criteria
* Expert knowledge of magnetic resonance physics
* Appropriate health and safety legislation
* Knowledge and experience of MR safety matters
Desirable criteria
* Understanding of research, development and clinical governance
* Working knowledge of quality management systems
* Wide experience of MR clinical applications
Values

* Programming skills and data analysis
* Expertise and experience in preparation of scientific papers or presentations
Desirable criteria

* Enthusiasm and commitment
* Willing to work across the North West Imaging Network with occasional (<10 per year) overnight stays
Desirable criteria
* Current driving license
