Senior Pharmacy Technician Clinical Trials

Step into a role where your skills directly contribute to groundbreaking research and improved patient care. We're looking for an enthusiastic, confident, and self‑motivated Pharmacy Technician who is eager to specialise in clinical trials and become part of our well‑established, forward‑thinking team.

You'll join a dynamic group of pharmacists and technicians who support the delivery of more than 100 active clinical trials. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop specialist expertise while playing a key role in studies that span academic, National Clinical Research Network‑adopted, commercial, and non‑commercial research.


What you'll be doing

* Supporting the pharmaceutical aspects of a wide range of clinical trials
* Providing high‑quality technical support to the Pharmacy Clinical Trials team
* Managing day‑to‑day tasks involved in the safe and effective provision of clinical trial services across the Trust


What we're looking for

* BTEC & NVQ Level 3 Pharmaceutical Science Certificate
* Accredited Checking Technician qualification
* Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
* A proactive, organised individual with excellent communication skills and a passion for research

This role requires flexibility, including working across both the Women's and Children's Hospitals, as well as participation in late‑night, weekend, and bank‑holiday rotas.


Main duties of the job

* To work as a Senior Pharmacy Technician within the Clinical Trials Team & multidisciplinary team providing technical support to the pharmacy clinical trials team at the Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust.
* Organise and participate in the dispensing and accuracy checking of clinical trial prescriptions.
* To be a member of the Pharmacy Clinical Trials Team and Research and Development Team.
* To support service improvements to the pharmacy clinical trials service.
* Line management duties of the Specialist Assistant Technical Officers within the Pharmacy clinical trials team.
* To carry out the day‑to‑day tasks relating to the provision of clinical trials within the Trust.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* NVQ Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Services and BTEC (or Equivalent) or Student Pharmacy Technician due to qualify 2026
* Registered with GPhC as a Pharmacy Technician (or eligible to register upon qualification)
* Experience in Clinical Trials


Knowledge and Nature of Experience

* A clear concept of the developing role of the Pharmacy Technician and ability to support the professional development of all technical staff
* Multidisciplinary working
* Previous experience of working in hospital pharmacy
* Experience of supervising and training other pharmacy staff
* Ability to write and follow Standard Operating Procedures


Analytical and Judgement Skills

* Ability to analyse data relevant to role and make suitable recommendations or actions
* Have problem solving skills with the ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands
* Able to make decisions on situations where there may be several courses of action
* Able to elevate issues and know limits of own ability


Professional / Managerial / Specialist / Knowledge

* Enhanced experience of using Microsoft Word and Excel
* Knowledge of computer based stock control, dispensing systems and associated technology
* Work effectively with colleagues as part of a team
* Experience with Data handling and data validation
* Knowledge of Pharmacy Computer System
