About us


UCL Department of Science and Technology Studies (STS) seeks to appoint one Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in History of Modern Science to contribute to taught undergraduate and masters modules, and to undertake related academic support duties. This is a part-time (0.4FTE), fixed-term appointment, available from 01 January 2026 to 31 May 2026.

We interpret science, technology and society broadly. Areas that we are interested in and are relevant to this position include but are not restricted to: 19th Century history of science, history of the Industrial Revolution, history of modern science, history of imperial science.


About the role


The main duties of the post will involve:

* Teach undergraduate and masters modules in the subject area.
* Complete marking for these modules in a timely fashion.
* Undertake administrative duties associated with the modules and with STS degrees.
* Contribute to the academic life of the department.

The specific module assigned to this post will likely include:

* HPSC00139 History of Science 2
* Teaching and/or assistance on teaching on further modules as directed.

HPSC0139 is taught to second year undergraduates. Particulars about the module are online in the module syllabus:

Additional duties will be assigned, including light assistance with assessment on other modules, one-off sessions with undergraduate and masters students, and light enabling duties, such as assistance with recruitment, assistance with career tutoring, and student support.

Please note that this position does not meet the requirements for visa sponsorship.


About you


Applicants are required to demonstrate expertise in history of modern science, as well as in science and technology studies. They will have experience in delivering teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Applicants should hold a PhD in an appropriate academic field. If not degree-holding, applicants should otherwise show significant professional development in the area of the subject to be taught. Applicants must also demonstrate a commitment to working harmoniously with colleagues and students of all cultures and backgrounds.

The appointee must be available for teaching during the term and times scheduled. The approximate contact time commitment per module is 7.3 hours per week. Please note that this post is not renewable and it is not subject to extension.
