We have an exciting opportunity now available with one of our sector‑leading consultancy clients! They are currently looking for a skilled Lead Infrastructure Engineer (End User Compute) to join our client’s team in the defence sector.
Job Responsibilities/Objectives
The Lead Infrastructure Engineer (End User Compute) will lead the End User Compute (EUC) workstream, report to the Lead Engineer or Project Manager as required, and design, deploy, configure and maintain the EUC components of a Wintel and VMware‑based multi‑tenant/multi‑datacentre platform, utilising VMware Horizon. The Engineer will be responsible for all aspects of EUC design, basing decisions upon supplier and NCSC recommended practices, adhering to end‑user and security architectural requirements, and facilitating the availability and consistent performance of the core application suite.
This is a hands‑on position requiring solid technical, interpersonal, communications and writing skills. The Engineer will document the design, adhering to secure‑by‑design (SbD) principles, ensuring fault tolerance and resilience, supporting disaster recovery; automating and documenting as much of the build process as possible, resolving defects post‑testing and implementing design changes as directed by Technical leadership or Project Managers.
The Engineer will drive the direction of all tasks allocated to the EUC services workstream throughout the delivery lifecycle of any task and will additionally support other workstreams as required.
* Design multi‑site/multi‑tenancy VDI farms using VMware Horizon View and related technologies.
* Produce and maintain design artefacts such as low‑level designs, release notes, and VMware‑related fail‑over/disaster‑recovery instructions.
* Document the build process, new procedures, and review/update them throughout delivery.
* Serve as the main point of contact (PoC) for all virtualisation related matters.
* Manage VDI service deployments across multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to production.
* Provide input into event and protective monitoring processes relevant to the VDI services workstream.
* Share technical expertise, provide mentorship and cross‑training to peers and team members.
* Independently analyse, solve, and correct issues; perform end‑to‑end problem resolution and provide feedback as required.
* Work in a disciplined and structured manner.
* Attend client‑facing meetings as required.
* Develop and maintain third‑party supplier relationships as necessary.
* Provide regular updates to technical and project leadership regarding all aspects of the virtualisation services delivery.
* Escalate any issues that may impact delivery of the virtualisation services components.
* Proactively solve problems.
* Be comfortable working in secure environments.
Required Skills/Experience
* Vocational/Diploma/Associate Degree in a technical field or relevant VMware certification, with a minimum of 3 years’ experience as a VMware Horizon Design Engineer.
* Skilled in designing and deploying multi‑site VDI farms using VMware vCenter, ESXi and Horizon View VDI.
* Experience with Unified Access Gateway, Dynamic Environment Manager (roaming profiles / user‑setting retention), Gold Image Management, AppVolumes Management and application management.
* Experience hardening virtualisation infrastructures using CIS Benchmarks or NIST SP 800‑53 controls.
* Experience designing and implementing fail‑over and disaster recovery for virtualisation services.
* Experience with certificate management related to VMware virtualisation.
* Comfortable working in multi‑datacentre environments where availability, resilience and fault tolerance are key.
* Good understanding of networking as it relates to VMware virtual networking and its interoperation with physical networking, including NSX‑T implementation.
* Strong written, communication, troubleshooting and analytical skills.
* Ability to organise and plan work independently.
* Flexible team player with a "get it done" attitude.
* Ability to multi‑task and context‑switch effectively between activities.
Desirable Skills/Experience
* Experience designing and building client devices such as thin, zero or thick clients with Windows or Linux‑based operating systems.
* Experience supporting Microsoft Windows Server services such as Active Directory (AD), AD DS and AD FS.
* Experience with Cisco‑based network services.
* Experience with Microsoft implementations of DNS and DHCP technologies.
* Knowledge of NAS, block and file solutions for virtualisation provisioning.
* Advanced infrastructure skills including administration, fault finding and diagnosis in an enterprise environment.
