The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is seeking a Clinical Research Associate to support an innovative portfolio of work focused on improving the clinical management of snakebite envenoming. The successful candidate will join the Centre for Snakebite Research & Interventions (CSRI), a substantial and multi-disciplinary research team working to identify and implement systems and tools to reduce the burden of snakebite in low-resource settings.

This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to global health research by supporting clinical studies on the use of infrared and 3D imaging in assessing cytotoxic envenoming, reviewing national and global management guidelines, and contributing to training and public engagement. The postholder will work under the leadership of Professor Ymkje Stienstra and collaborate with a diverse team of international experts.

Key responsibilities will include:

Clinical Research
• Investigate the use of infrared and 3D imaging to grade severity of cytotoxic snakebite and monitor antivenom response
• Conduct literature review on compartment syndrome in the context of snakebite
• Analyse national guidelines on the clinical management of snakebite envenoming

Research Communication and Engagement
• Contribute to publications in peer-reviewed journals and participate in grant development
• Support public engagement initiatives and contribute to dissemination activities

Capacity Strengthening and Teaching
• Develop training materials to support the clinical management of snakebite
• Participate in student supervision and teaching activities
• Deliver context-appropriate training for in-country clinical and epidemiological research staff

Collaboration and Teamwork
• Work closely with international and local collaborators in LMIC settings
• Ensure integration of clinical and epidemiological data collection strategies
• Support CSRI’s research goals through effective communication, coordination, and problem solving

The successful candidate will possess:

• An MD or equivalent qualification
• Understanding of clinical and epidemiological data challenges in LMICs
• Experience using analytical and statistical tools relevant to health research
• Research experience in LMIC settings, preferably in Africa
• Proficiency in English (IELTS > 6.5 or TOEFL > 92, or equivalent)
• Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and manage multiple priorities
• Strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to collaboration
• Sensitivity to cultural contexts and ethical considerations in research
• Willingness and flexibility to travel internationally
