Overview

Clinical Lead Nurse Chemotherapy service – join to apply for the Clinical Lead Nurse Chemotherapy service role at Walsall Council.

To deliver autonomous advanced level practice encompasses aspects of education, research and leadership but is firmly grounded in direct compassionate care provision or clinical work with patients, families, and wider populations. The post holder’s practice should be developed to an advanced level, whereby they can directly or indirectly influence all aspects of care and management of patients on the SACT care pathway. The post holder will lead on Chemotherapy development and implementation of a high quality, safe and effective systemic anti-cancer therapy service.


Responsibilities

* The post holder will be responsible for the planning and organisation of a chemotherapy service and to strategically advise Trust wide where chemotherapy is delivered.
* Responsible for cytotoxic policy development and implementation.
* Provide leadership and support to the Chemotherapy service.
* Undertake clinical review of patients, coordinate and manage transitions of care and support for the patient and family/carer across the chemotherapy treatment pathway.
* To promote and develop cross boundary speciality specific care pathways in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team.
* To participate in developing and providing education and programmes in the management of problems for patients and carers within the chemotherapy unit.
* To provide mentorship assessing staff SACT competence.
* To undertake Nurse-led chemotherapy pre-assessment clinics, PICC line insertion procedures and toxicity follow-up clinics.
* Maintain responsibility for the safe administration of cytotoxic chemotherapy as per Trust policies.
* To act as a lead specialist resource for patients or carers providing information on agencies/organisations who are able to offer support.
* To lead in the development and implementation of standards of care and patient pathways that reflect cancer national guidance.
* To provide clinical leadership and knowledge in developing the chemotherapy service in close collaboration with the chemotherapy ward manager and operational service lead.
* To participate in governance, audit and research activities and ensure areas of clinical risk are reported and addressed appropriately.
* To develop robust clinical patient pathways and co-ordinate care between hospitals where required.
* To liaise with the patient’s GP to ensure adequate community support.
* To develop and run clinical nurse specialist led clinics for patient assessment, treatment reviews and holistic assessment of patient care needs.
* Act as a resource for all disciplines seeking advice regarding management of chemotherapy patients.
* Provide enhanced clinical assessment and ability to prescribe medications within the scope of professional practice to facilitate nurse-led clinics.
* Lead effective communication with the multi-professional team and the chemotherapy navigator regarding patient pathways and booking systems.
* Deliver education and training programs to healthcare professionals.
* Develop standards of care and patient pathways with oncologists, ward manager, ACPs, and service leads in line with cancer national guidance.
* Proactively seek improvements to service delivery, including waiting times and assessment-to-treatment processes.
* Attend relevant cancer advisory groups and national forums to inform service development.
* Contribute to service development and continuous quality improvement through audits and patient feedback.
* Maintain patient records and ensure informed consent information is up-to-date and accessible.
* Coordinate care across MDTs and ensure timely investigations and discussions.


Qualifications/Experience (Implied)

* Experience in chemotherapy service delivery and advanced level practice.
* Ability to lead, teach and mentor staff involved in delivering systemic anti-cancer treatment.
* Experience in pre-assessment clinics, PICC line procedures and toxicity follow-up.
