Health & Safety Manager

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Health & Safety Manager to take ownership of health, safety, and welfare standards across a portfolio of construction projects.
This is a hands-on role requiring strong technical knowledge, site presence, and the ability to support project teams throughout both pre-construction and delivery phases. You will play a key role in shaping safety culture, ensuring statutory compliance, and driving continuous improvement across the business.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Construction
* Support the preparation of tender documentation and provide health & safety input during bid stages.
* Provide technical advice and statistics to strengthen submissions.
* Attend tender meetings and provide specialist health & safety guidance where required.
Construction & Project Delivery
* Develop and maintain Construction Phase Safety Plans in line with CDM Regulations 2015.
* Work closely with Project Managers and Site Managers to manage ongoing site safety requirements.
* Provide specialist advice on temporary works, fire safety, and emergency procedures.
* Undertake weekly site and scaffold inspections and issue detailed reports.
* Support risk management by identifying hazards and implementing safe systems of work.
* Ensure all personnel receive appropriate inductions and toolbox talks.
* Assess subcontractor health & safety competence and support approval processes.
* Assist with accident and incident investigations and support HSE inspections.
* Ensure statutory health and safety compliance across all active sites.
Company-Wide Responsibilities
* Support the ongoing development and implementation of health & safety policies and procedures.
* Keep the business informed of legislative changes and best practice updates.
* Deliver safety briefings and periodic communications to staff.
* Assist with training programme development and safety awareness initiatives.
* Support accident reporting, trend analysis, and performance benchmarking.
* Liaise with governing bodies such as the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and local authorities when required.
* Contribute to continuous improvement across quality, environmental, and safety management systems.
These responsibilities reflect the operational and compliance-driven nature of the role, including leadership in policy development, site inspections, and regulatory compliance.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential:
* Proven experience as a Health & Safety Manager within the construction industry
* Strong working knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015
* Experience conducting site inspections and managing safety compliance
* Excellent communication skills and ability to influence site teams
* Strong organisational and problem-solving abilities
* Experience managing accident investigations and risk mitigation
* Ability to work collaboratively across project and operational teams
Desirable:
* NEBOSH Construction Certificate (or equivalent)
* Experience working for a Principal Contractor
* Knowledge of scaffolding systems and temporary works
* Familiarity with Considerate Constructors Scheme requirements
* Experience supporting ISO standards (9001, 14001, 45001)
* Awareness of sustainability standards such as BREEAM, LEED, or SKA
