SP Senior Materials Engineer

About the Role

A talented individual skilled as a Materials Engineer is required to join the Special Projects team at Lockheed Martin, Ampthill. The job will involve a range of materials research activities. We are in need of someone to do hands on materials R&D and possibly some some hands-on testing.

The job involves a wide range of materials research activities including:

1. Leading small scale materials research tasks while ensuring the cost and schedule achievement of the task.
2. Supporting the development of manufacturing processes to ensure consistent manufacturable products that meet required quality and technical requirements.
3. Providing advice and recommendations on Materials testing, selection and application.
4. Building and maintaining materials properties databases and specifications to support the Engineering community.
5. Producing technical documentation to support all activities, from trials specifications to detailed trials reporting.
6. Communicating with all stakeholders, including Programme, Internal Stakeholder and any external suppliers to ensure planning is detailed and results delivered to the highest standards.
7. Use of Microsoft Office and some bespoke software tools associated with materials trials analysis.
A key requirement of this role is the ability to obtain and maintain a high‑level security clearance. If you do not currently hold the required clearance, we can support you through the application process.

Required skills, qualifications and experience

8. Materials research or Materials science and engineering background (qualifications and work experience) in composite materials.
9. Composites experience in carbon fibre composites processing and testing.
10. Additive manufacturing in Aluminium / Stainless Steel
11. Understanding of composite materials processing / metallic additive manufacturing
12. Experience in composite methods.
13. Understanding of composite materials applied to space and aerospace applications.
14. Writing technical documents.
15. Must be able to work in the UK without restrictions in accordance with UK National Law and be prepared to successfully undertake an appropriate level of UK National Security Vetting according to UK Government National Security Vetting criteria: a minimum of SC Clearance will be required for the role, however holding a DV or being prepared to go through an application immediately will be beneficial.
Desired Skills:
16. Background in high temperature materials / Hypersonics materials would be a welcome addition.
17. Experience of Lab based materials development and testing.
18. Understanding of phenolic resin processing, properties and chemistry
19. Experience of working withing an ISO 9001 Quality system.
20. Presentation skills.
21. Knowledge of both destructive and non-destructive inspection techniques.
