Job Overview

Bangor University School of Health Sciences is offering a permanent part‑time (80% FTE) lecturer/clinical supervisor position for dental hygiene and dental therapy students. The post is located on campus in Bangor and at clinical placement sites across North Wales, with some remote working possible within the UK.

Responsible to: Head of School
Grade: 7 – Salary £38,249 – £45,413 p.a. (pro‑rata)
Contract: Permanent
Closing date: 03/11/2025


Purpose of the Job

* Contribute to achieving the academic objectives of the School through the clinical supervision of undergraduate dental hygiene students and to course administration.
* Teach at undergraduate level, including clinical supervision of dental hygiene students.
* Develop teaching materials, course design, assessment methods and contribute to module co‑ordination.
* Provide pastoral and academic support to undergraduate students.
* Undertake administrative duties as designated by the Head of School.


Main Duties and Responsibilities


Teaching Duties

* Engage in the teaching of dental programmes and assessment of undergraduate dental hygiene students within the clinical environment.
* Monitor activities and actions of undergraduate dental hygiene students to ensure development of clinical skills and knowledge aligned with course outcomes.
* Offer appropriate feedback and encourage student reflection.
* Provide guidance in clinical dental practice within the GDC scope of practice.
* Maintain clinical dental education standards by working to evidence‑based practice and agreed clinical guidelines and care pathways.
* Take day‑to‑day responsibility for the organisation and co‑ordination of patient treatment within undergraduate dental programmes.
* Assess students in line with the quality assurance requirements of the School.
* Undertake administration related to clinical supervision of students.
* Contribute towards programme developments.
* Engage in development activities in relation to dental hygiene or therapy and training of the dental team.
* Maintain clinical skills via contribution to patient treatment and care.
* Maintain and develop scholarly activities in line with University and College strategies.


Administrative and Wider Contribution Duties

* Participate in student recruitment and induction procedures of the School (e.g. School and University Open Days).
* Contribute to the School’s management and participate in the administration of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (e.g. organising exams, contributing to accreditation/QA procedures if module co‑ordinator).
* Contribute to marketing of programmes by participating in School and College link activities and other marketing initiatives.
* Undertake any other duties relevant to the School’s activities and commensurate with the level of the post, as directed by the Programme Lead.
* Undertake other administrative duties and responsibilities as directed by the Head of School (e.g. membership of School boards and task groups, addressing/supporting undergraduate student experience).


Other Duties and Responsibilities

* Participate in performance review and developmental activities.
* Comply with the University’s equality policies and statements, Dignity at Work and Study Policy and the University’s Welsh Language Scheme.
* Maintain a safe and healthy working environment in accordance with all relevant health and safety policies, procedures and risk assessments.
* Comply with relevant legal and financial policies and procedures and be aware of responsibilities in terms of the legal requirements of the post.


Person Specification


Qualifications and Training

* Essential: Diploma in Dental Hygiene/ Therapy or Degree in Oral Sciences or Dental Hygiene and Therapy; Registration with the GDC as a Dental Hygienist/Therapist.
* Desirable: Formal teaching qualification such as PGCertHE.


Experience and Knowledge

* Essential: Substantial experience of working as a dental hygienist/therapist within a primary care setting.
* Desirable: Experience in clinical training of the dental team; teaching experience within Higher Education.


Skills and Abilities

* Essential: Excellent clinical skills; effective clinical supervision of students; teamwork; excellent communication skills; IT skills (e.g. VLE techniques and other learning technologies); active networker.
* Desirable: Experience in the clinical assessment of students.


Other

* Flexible approach.
* Ability to travel independently between sites.
* Commitment to the University Mission Statement.
* The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable; opportunities for learning Welsh exist.
