We have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join our Trading Standards team as a Trading Standards Officer on a two-year fixed term contract.
Our Trading Standards service protects local residents, supports businesses, and tackles unfair, unsafe and illegal trading practices through advice, education and enforcement. This role focuses specifically on supporting our work in tackling the sale of illegal tobacco and vapes, and the supply of age-restricted products to minors.
Youll join a supportive and busy team of professionals working from initial intelligence reports right through to enforcement action and prosecution, while also supporting wider Trading Standards functions.
What will I be doing?
- Act on intelligence relating to illegal tobacco and vapes, including visiting premises, gathering evidence, conducting test purchases, and seizing illicit products.
- Investigate offences concerning illicit tobacco, vapes and age-restricted sales to minors.
- Prepare prosecution case files, including drafting witness statements and organising supporting evidence.
- Record intelligence accurately and complete administrative tasks linked to tobacco/vape enforcement and other Trading Standards work.
- Engage professionally with businesses, partner agencies, victims and suspected offenders.
- Work proactively and reactively under the guidance of Senior Officers and Managers.
What skills and experience do you need to have?:
An understanding of Fair Trading and/or Product Safety legislation
DTS or a full DCATS qualification or its antecedents for appointment at Grade 11, or part DCATS qualification (or equivalents) for appointment at Grade 9.
Good working knowledge across a range of Trading Standards functions.
A positive attitude with excellent organisational / communication / IT skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision as part of a team are essential.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to plan workloads, meet deadlines and work independently.
Confidence dealing with victims, suspected offenders and potentially confrontational situations.
Ability to analyse, interpret and clearly explain legislation.
Experience writing accurate reports and compiling case files.
Manual UK driving licence and access to a vehicle insured for business use.

The roles are full time, but we will also consider applications from those seeking to work on a part-time basis. The Trading Standards Team are based at Matlock, but as part of our Modern Ways of Working programme, we are currently working on a hybrid basis.
