Acute Medicine is an essential pillar of urgent care at UHBW. We have ambitions to grow the service at Weston General Hospital with the expansion of our Acute Medical Unit, Same Day Emergency Care Unit, and optimising clinical pathways. Trust and Team
Our service comprises a 28-bed Acute Medical Unit (Sandford Ward), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit, Waterside 16-bed General Medicine ward, and the Medical Take in the Emergency Department. We work closely with colleagues in the Emergency Department, Care of the Elderly, Respiratory Medicine, Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Surgical and Trauma & Orthopaedics specialties. We also engage with colleagues across Bristol hospitals and would review cross-site working arrangements where appropriate.

We welcome applications from candidates on the CESR pathway. The successful candidate will provide clinical leadership and direction for the multi-professional team in the management of acute medical patients. They are expected to lead ward rounds, direct patient management, perform practical procedures, teach junior medical and other staff, attend multidisciplinary meetings, participate in governance activity, be involved in service management and administration, and liaise with professionals inside and outside the Trust as required.

Acute Medicine Service Outline
* 28 inpatient bedded Acute Medical Unit on Sandford Ward. Clinical leadership provided by two consultants based on the ward from 09:00–17:00 to perform ward rounds, oversee new admissions and manage referrals.
* Same Day Emergency Unit operates 7 days a week from 08:00 to 22:00. The Acute Medicine Consultant is present 09:00–17:00 on weekdays to facilitate rapid senior review; a HOT/Bring back clinic operates within SDEC.
* Waterside Ward, 16 beds. Ward rounds take place 2–3 times weekly with daily board round support.
* Acute Medicine provides leadership of the Acute Medical Take with the Acute Medicine consultant leading from 09:00–17:00 on weekdays within the Emergency Department.
* GIM On-Call element on a 1:11 ratio, on-site 17:00–19:00 post-admission and non-resident until 08:00.
