University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust are delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us in the Emergency Care Therapy Team (ECTT) at Derriford Hospital. The position is for an Occupational Therapy Senior Technical Instructor who will be responsible for clinical and non‑clinical assessment, treatment, and discharge of a caseload of patients within the Emergency Department, Acute Medical Units and Frailty Same Day Emergency Care. The role also includes outreach visits to patients’ homes for functional assessments and equipment guidance within agreed protocols and scope of practice.
Applicants must be able to work the 7‑day rota and late shift pattern. Preference will be given to internal Trust staff and to staff holding ‘Priority’ or ‘At Risk’ status within Devon who can demonstrate recent relevant experience in line with the Person Specification.
Main Duties
* Manage patients by assessing needs, developing treatment plans, and reviewing progress.
* Plan and prioritise therapy assessments and case monitoring within competencies, following guidelines.
* Conduct initial discussions, gather information from patients, carers, and IT systems; perform functional, cognitive, mobility and stair assessments.
* Plan outreach visits, assess patients at home, and provide guidance on equipment, adaptations and support services ensuring personal safety.
* Provide equipment, training and education to patients and families, liaising with carers and agencies for safe discharge or transfer of care.
* Manage own caseload and mitigate risks within competencies.
* Screen Emergency Care patients to identify those suitable for further assessment by ECTT.

Job Responsibilities
* Perform therapeutic assessment, treatment and discharge of a caseload of patients within Emergency Care, Medical Assessment, Short Stay Ward and Frailty Units.
* Conduct outreach visits for functional assessment and equipment guidance.
* Carry out all clinical duties within agreed protocols and scope of practice.
* Accountable for own clinical practice, caseload management and progress monitoring.
* Develop and implement OT treatment programmes, set personal goals and modify treatment as necessary.
* Assess performance of activities of daily living, cognitive impairment and the impact on function.
* Teach use of specialist rehabilitation equipment and provide education on injury management.
* Plan and manage own patient caseload, act as first point of therapy contact, provide social history and complex condition information.
* Communicate effectively with patients, carers and multidisciplinary team members, attend MDT meetings and contribute to discharge planning.
* Complete functional assessments on wards and in patients’ homes (e.g., PADL, kitchen safety).
* Work independently under supervision of an HCPC‑registered occupational therapist.
Person Specification
Essential
* Broad range of demonstrable acute hospital/healthcare experience.
* Previous experience working within an OT service at similar level or above.
* Completed Band 3 Therapy competencies with reflective practice and portfolio.
* Foundation Degree or equivalent, or minimum NVQ/diploma in healthcare (level 3).
* Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
* Professional, patient‑focused approach, role modelling and excellent organisational skills.
Desirable
* Knowledge and experience of OT treatment for trauma or acute illness.
* Experience working with physiotherapists and in emergency care settings.
* Attendance of professional courses applicable to the emergency care setting.
* Evidence of personal leadership and training of colleagues or MDT members.
* Healthcare values‑based education and training.
