Job Summary The Direct Trade Manager is responsible for developing and implementing the Direct Trade Strategy – ensuring that it is aligned to the planning and budgeting processes and delivers Production targets. The role oversees the recruitment, management, training and development of both experienced and inexperienced hires. Within the inexperienced hires there will be Apprentices, Career Converters and possibly long term unemployed / ex-offenders – all looking to develop skills within the housebuilding sector and thereby growing the ever-diminishing Labour pool. Primary Responsibilities Working with the Production Director and Commercial Director to establish the mix of trade skills required on an annual basis by the Business Unit and gaining DMD approval for the rolling Five Year Direct Trade Plan. Ensure correct contracts are issued to Direct Trades, Apprentices and Site Support Teams. Responsible for strategising the conversion of Apprentices into Direct Trades for Taylor Wimpey. Working with the finance team to ensure Direct Trades, Apprentices and Site Support Teams are paid and overtime is approved via weekly time sheets. Liaise with subcontractors to maintain a good level of engagement as the Business Unit builds it Direct Trade Plan. Develop a campaign to recruit individuals and /or gangs of Direct Trades, Apprentices and Site Support Teams whilst promoting the benefits of being employed by Taylor Wimpey. Implement Taylor Wimpey’s a strategy for recruitment and training of Apprentices, Direct Trades and Site Support Team. Meet regularly with the RHSEA to ensure any development or concerns in regards to safety are addressed in regards to Direct Trades, Apprentices and Site Support Teams. Responsible for checking quality of work and ensuring it is maintained by the work completed by Apprentices, Direct Trades and Site Support Teams. Working with the Quality Manager and Site Managers to ensure a strategy is inplace. Undertake weekly site visits to monitor quality and quantum of work undertaken ensuring this is reflected in pay. Undertake weekly site visits to develop and mentor Direct Trades, Apprentices and Site Support Teams. Undertake inductions and updates with Direct Trades, Apprentices and Site Support Teams in regards to Taylor Wimpey Induction, Policies, Manuals and procedures. Responsible for overall management of Direct Trades, Apprentices and Site Support Team ensuring sites are resourced adequately. Including monitoring annual leave and absences. Point of contact for Site Managers to ensure sites are resourced daily. Responsible for ensuring monitoring and tracking of documents are completed such as Apprentice Diaries and Passports. Management of the welfare of Direct Trades, Apprentices and the Site Support Team as necessary. Ensuring Direct Trades, Apprentices and Site Support Teams are equipped with the tools, uniform, PPE and equipment required. Engage with schools, colleges, training providers and leading bodies such as CITB as an ambassadorial role for Taylor Wimpey regarding qualifications/accreditations. Arranging Taylor Wimpey attendance at Careers fairs and Skills Shows to promote a career in the Housebuilding Industry and drive attraction of apprentices and career converters. Communicate effectively with the Business Unit Management Team, Business Unit departments and Subcontractors in regards to the strategy of Direct Trades. Responsible for Direct Trades, Apprentices and Site Support Teams having access to IT and are set up with email addresses etc. Planning and arranging applicable Taylor Wimpey courses/training. Track and manage the HSE and general training of Apprentices, Direct Trades and Site Support teams. Responsible for reclaiming grants and levy’s for all Direct Trades, Apprentices and Site Support Teams. Ensuring information is entered onto the DAS account for Direct Trades, Apprentices and Site Support Teams. Point of contact for agency workers and arranging cover. Experience, Qualifications, Technical Requirements Ability to work under pressure and deal with a number of stakeholders Experience of managing a high caseload of Direct Labour over a wide geographical area. Excellent Communication Skills, written and verbal. Knowledge of legislation and management of employees Qualification and experience of coaching, mentoring and training direct reports. Ability to plan and make decisions with a customer focus and business awareness.
