Clinical Psychologist (Neuropsychology)
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. This is a new post for a Clinical Psychologist in Neuropsychology (Band 7 or Band 8A depending on experience), located in Victoria House at Southampton General Hospital (UHS).
The highly regarded Neuropsychology service is part of the Wessex Neurological service which provides a range of neurological services for the Wessex region. The post holder will join an established well‑integrated neuropsychology team that provides diagnostic and support services across a range of clinics and acute wards at UHS. This role will involve diagnostic assessments and therapeutic input for a broad spectrum of neurological conditions for both inpatients and outpatients, and will also contribute to the awake craniotomy service.
Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
* Provide direct and indirect clinical input to patients, their families and carers, including attendance at multidisciplinary team meetings.
* Deliver detailed cognitive assessments and contribute to the provision of a high‑quality evidence‑based psychological service.
* Participate in clinical research trials and service audits.
* Take part in the awake craniotomy series and other speciality services such as epilepsy, early onset dementia, stroke rehabilitation, HD and MS outpatient neurology.
* Provide supervision and peer support to junior staff and trainee neuropsychologists.
Qualifications / Training Required
* Post‑graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology, accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).
* Registration as a Practitioner Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council.
Desirable
* Formal training in supervision of other psychologists.
* Registration on the BPS Register of Applied Practice Supervisors (RAPPS).
* Post‑doctoral training in Clinical Neuropsychology and eligibility for the BPS Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists.
* Experience in awake craniotomy surgery.
Previous or Relevant Experience Necessary
* Minimum two years qualified experience as a clinical psychologist.
* Experience in a neuro‑relevant setting such as a neuropsychology service, memory assessment service, older people’s mental health service or an acute neuro department.
* Experience exercising clinical responsibility for psychological care and treatment.
* Knowledge of relevant legislation and policy developments in neurological and long‑term conditions.
Desirable (Experience)
* Supervision and teaching of assistants and trainee psychologists.
* Working toward the BPS qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology.
* Representation of the profession in policy forums.
* Experience with advanced theoretical and experimental models for diagnostic procedures involving brain stimulation.
Aptitudes And Skills Required
* Skilled in complex neuropsychological and psychological assessment methods.
* High‑level written and verbal communication skills to a wide range of recipients.
* Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information effectively.
* Tolerance and management of cognitive confusion, impairments and disturbed behaviour.
* Consultation skills for other professional and non‑professional groups.
* Ability to develop and use multimedia materials for presentations.
* Organisation and planning of assessments for junior staff or trainee neuropsychologists.
* Evidence of continued professional development as recommended by BPS and HCPC.
* Culturally competent and non‑stigmatising service provision.
* Ability to work autonomously in community and hospital settings.
* Competence in IT systems and statistical packages.
