Consultant in Ophthalmology (Medical Retina)

Required to fill this post within the Ophthalmology Department at St James's University Hospital.

The primary objectives of this post are to support and develop local capacity within the medical retina service. In addition the post holder will contribute to the overall function of the ophthalmology department by supporting all colleagues and points of service delivery as required. As part of this, the consultant will provide clinical leadership and drive service improvement, efficiency and innovation in their area of specialism.

The post holder will be expected to engage fully in all aspects of clinical audit, clinical governance and patient experience pertaining to their area of specialism.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant should possess FRCOphth (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK or have attained CESR. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

Applicants should have established skills in Ophthalmology and Medical Retina services. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Job responsibilities

In relation to this post, the Ophthalmology department at Leeds Teaching Hospitals strives to offer the very best care to all our patients through delivery of high quality clinically services underpinned by excellent research, innovation and teaching. This replacement post has a focus on the sub-speciality of medical retina, placing the post-holder at the heart of both a busy service for the local population and a highly specialised service with a thriving research portfolio for the region.

Person Specification


Management, Interpersonal Skills & Other Requirements

* Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
* Well organised and skilled in good time management.
* Effective interpersonal skills.
* Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
* Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
* Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
* - CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) or CESR. International applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process. CESR applicants must be on the relevant Specialist Register at the time of application.
* Attendance at recognised management course.


Qualifications

* Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
* YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE CLEARLY STATED ON YOUR APPLICATION FORM.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely.


Experience

* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in the management of Ophthalmic conditions.
* Specifically, must demonstrate higher training in Medical Retina.
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.


Training, Research, Teaching & Audit

* Should have completed a recognised training programme in Ophthalmology.
* Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
* Experience in training undergraduate medical students, postgraduate doctors and non-medical colleagues.
* Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
* Prior experience in multicentre clinical research and experience of supervising research by junior staff.
* Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
* Experience of implementing change in clinical practice in light of clinical audit findings
