The salary for this role is £56,596 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 5 days each week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.

This role is based at the following site: Culham, Oxfordshire.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.


The Role

Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to make a difference? Join our team and contribute to the future of fusion energy. As Equipment Scientist, you will undertake materials science projects within the Materials Division as part of the UKAEA’s fusion research programme. You will work independently or in teams, often collaborating with universities, industrial partners, and overseas research organizations. Responsibilities include defining project scope, recruiting team members, conducting experiments, and reporting results through reports, conferences, and publications. Additionally, you will have project management, funding application, and supervisory responsibilities.


Key Accountabilities

1. Organize and coordinate projects, including equipment availability, scope, and resources for sample preparation, testing, and modeling.
2. Provide consultation to the magnets centre to ensure delivery of excellence within UKAEA's portfolio.
3. Deliver high-quality characterization of nuclear materials through innovative approaches.
4. Present results in technical reports, conferences, and peer-reviewed publications.
5. Manage a small team of material scientists and engineers, providing research direction and project allocation. Lead teams during experiments or modeling exercises to ensure robust data collection and reporting.
6. Handle line management tasks and support recruitment activities.
7. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on materials for fusion power plants, building a network with academia and industry.
8. Manage relationships with external collaborators to access expertise and facilitate new projects.
9. Propose and secure funding for projects aligned with UKAEA strategies.
10. Represent UKAEA at conferences and meetings nationally and internationally.

Salary: £56,596 (inclusive of Specialist Allowance) plus benefits including an outstanding pension scheme.

Qualifications and experience required include a degree in materials science or related fields, expertise in magnets and superconductors or experimental design around superconducting materials, experience in laboratory or research environments, and a strong publication record. A PhD and experience with materials processing, analysis, modeling, or engineering design codes are also required.
