Basildon is a borough with scale, complexity, and ambition. As Executive Director of Homes, Communities & Environment, you’ll lead the services that define the everyday experience of over 190,000 residents — from housing and environmental services to community safety, leisure, and open spaces.
As the Executive Director of Homes, Communities & Environment, you’ll joining a council that’s serious about delivery. Ahead of LGR, you’ll help shape how we respond to change, how we lead through uncertainty, and how we deliver for our communities.
This is a role for someone who thrives on challenge and wants to be part of something bigger. With 27,000 new homes planned, a £300m temporary accommodation pressure, and increasing demand for safe, inclusive neighbourhoods, you’ll be at the forefront of delivering services that are visible, valued, and under real pressure. You’ll also play a key role in preparing the organisation for regulatory scrutiny and future reform, as such, you will need to hold, or be working towards, the CIH Level 5 Diploma in Housing, to be completed by 2028 in line with national regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
* Lead the services that define the everyday experience of residents — housing, environmental services, community safety, leisure, and open spaces.
* Support Assistant Directors, drive improvement, and ensure services are compliant, fit for purpose, and delivered with confidence for residents.
* Prepare the organisation for regulatory scrutiny and future reform; hold, or be working towards, the CIH Level 5 Diploma in Housing to be completed by 2028.
* Shape responses to change and uncertainty, build strong partnerships, and navigate complexity to deliver outcomes.
Qualifications / Experience
* Strategic leader with deep housing and community insight, able to navigate complexity and build partnerships.
* Experience leading housing, environmental, and community services at scale; able to deliver under pressure.
* Must hold, or be working towards, the CIH Level 5 Diploma in Housing (to be completed by 2028).
Salary and Application Details
Salary: Up to £146,245
