Overview

An enthusiastic and highly motivated clinician is invited to apply for a general consultant post at Newham University Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. This is a newly created substantive post of 10 PAs, joining the existing team of six Paediatricians. You will have appropriate training and experience in general Paediatrics. This post does not have any neonatal commitments. An experience to complement existing subspecialties or developing a new subspecialty would be beneficial. A candidate with paediatric subspeciality experience would be exceptionally welcome to apply for the position.

Paediatric ward is a very busy department looking after a very deprived and young Paediatric population. The department works collaboratively with three other sites in the trust, also closely working with Paediatric network.

Barts Health provides care to a diverse population of 2.5 million across east London – that’s 6,000 people every day, speaking over 60 different languages. Our patients are at the heart of everything we do, and we are committed to ensuring that people living in east London live healthy lives.

All applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of achieving a CCT (or equivalent) at the date of interview. The interview will be conducted in early January 2026.

Main duties of the job

The Paediatrics department is based in the newly built state‑of‑the‑art Children and Young Peoples Rainbow Centre. The department is one of the busiest in and around London. Annually we transfer on average 50 sick children to tertiary centres (one per week) compared to similar units which transfer half that number. The Rainbow Centre houses the Children’s Outpatients, Ambulatory/Day Care and inpatient bays and cubicles. There are two fully equipped high‑dependency beds which provide NCPAP to children with respiratory insufficiency and stabilise sick children. We are a level‑1 shared care oncology centre working closely with our primary treatment centres of UCLH and GOSH. We have large cohorts of children and young people with chronic health issues such as haemoglobinopathies and diabetes mellitus in the borough of Newham requiring care through the Centre. We work closely with our tertiary centres and colleagues in adult care to ensure a smooth transition of care.
