Offer description

National Grid is hiring for a Project Engineer - HVDC Converters (Engineering)

Great Britain’s electricity infrastructure is undergoing an ambitious and essential transformation to deliver a cleaner, greener, net‑zero energy system. HVDC technology sits at the heart of this journey — enabling offshore wind connections, strengthening network resilience and supporting the next generation of the UK transmission network.

Job Purpose

As a Project Engineer – HVDC Converters, you will play a key role in delivering complex, high‑impact infrastructure projects. Acting as a technical focal point within integrated project teams, you’ll contribute across the full lifecycle of HVDC converter stations — from early design and specification through to commissioning and handover. You'll work closely with Joint Venture partners, OEMs and internal Subject Matter Experts to shape engineering strategy, embed consistent ways of working and help build world‑class engineering capability across our growing HVDC portfolio. This role will support major projects including Eastern Green Link 5 and Western Link.

What You’ll Do

* Act as the project‑level technical focal point for HVDC converter station engineering
* Coordinate and integrate technical inputs from OEMs, consultants and internal engineering teams
* Support the development and review of converter station designs, specifications and technical documentation
* Manage key technical interfaces across converter sub‑systems, including:
o Valves and power electronics
o Transformers
o Control & protection systems
o Auxiliary systems
o AC/DC interfaces
* Ensure compliance with National Grid standards, Grid Code and regulatory requirements
* Support procurement activities, including tender evaluations and technical clarifications
* Identify, track and mitigate converter‑related technical risks and deviations
* Provide engineering assurance during FAT, site activities and commissioning
* Capture and apply lessons learned to continuously improve project delivery
* Align project engineering activities with wider engineering strategy and best practice

About You

* Experience working on HVDC or high‑voltage substation projects, particularly converter stations, power electronics or related systems
* Strong understanding of HVDC technology, system integration and converter station design principles
* Experience working with or alongside OEMs, EPC contractors or large infrastructure delivery partners
* Confident reviewing technical documentation and contributing to detailed engineering discussions
* Comfortable operating in complex, multi‑stakeholder environments
* Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence across disciplines
* A clear commitment to safety, quality and engineering excellence

What You’ll Get

A competitive salary between £65,000 – £78,000 dependent on capability.

As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%. You will also have access to a number of flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.

This role closes on 28th of May at 23:59, however we encourage candidates to submit their application as early as possible and not wait until the published closing date as this can vary.
