Liverpool (Merseyside)
Research associate
Posted: 16 May
Offer description

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to join an interdisciplinary research project examining whether Home Fire Safety Visits (HFSVs) are an effective and cost-effective intervention for preventing accidental dwelling fires (ADFs) in the UK. You will play a central role in delivering the project, collaborating with external partners such as fire and rescue services, national policy stakeholders, and a Public Advisory Panel. This post is fixed term for 2 years. You will lead and support advanced quantitative and qualitative methods analyses to assess whether HFSVs reduce the incidence of ADFs, evaluate the duration of intervention effects, and examine regional variation in delivery, including how this aligns with population risk profiles. You will also contribute to research investigating the mechanisms through which HFSVs influence behaviour, including how variations in delivery models affect outcomes. In addition, you will contribute to evidence synthesis and primary research to identify the wider social and economic impacts of ADFs across sectors, including fire and rescue services, healthcare systems, and insurers. You will be based in the Department of Psychology, which is known for theoretically driven, impactful research that influences behaviour and policy at national and international levels. In the 2021 REF, 88% of its research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent. In addition to working with colleagues from Psychology (Dr Sara Waring, Dr Susan Giles), the role also involves close interdisciplinary work with Health Data Science (Dr Ffion Curtis), and Public Health, Policy and Systems (Dr William Whittaker, Dr Brendan Collins). Applicants should have a PhD (or be near completion) in a relevant discipline, such as psychology, public health, or a related field. They should demonstrate experience in conducting quantitative analysis of large or complex datasets using statistical software (e.g. SPSS, R), as well as collecting and analysing qualitative data (e.g. interviews, Grounded Theory approaches), and undertaking scoping reviews or other forms of evidence synthesis. A strong understanding of research design and evaluation methods (e.g. outcome and process evaluation, logic models) is essential, alongside excellent written and verbal communication skills to engage both academic and non-academic audiences. Applicants should also have strong organisational and time management skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Knowledge of behaviour change in health or related settings, and experience of building effective working relationships with a range of stakeholders (e.g. public sector organisations such as fire and rescue services or health agencies), are desirable. The Postdoctoral Research Associate post will commence on Monday 20th July. The university operates a hybrid work environment for staff, with a current minimum requirement of 40% on Campus, with 60% considered desirable where possible. If you are still awaiting your PhD to be awarded you will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that you have been awarded your PhD, your salary will be increased to Grade 7, spine point 31. Commitment to Diversity The University of Liverpool is committed to enhancing workforce diversity. We actively seek to attract, develop, and retain colleagues with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We welcome applications from all genders/gender identities, Black, Asian, or Minority Ethnic backgrounds, individuals living with a disability, and members of the LGBTQIA community.
