What it's like to work here

The Sherborne Estate is an amazing place with a diverse range of habitats and features. The estate has a rich history, and you will experience this through the landscape, the communities and the built environment. From Grade I and II listed parkland and buildings, to woodland, rivers and wetlands, there's a lot to get excited about.

That's why our team is so motivated and enthusiastic. Currently, we’re halfway through what is potentially Europe’s largest historic landscape restoration project and several other habitat restoration projects, including woodland and wetland. This is a wonderful opportunity to be at the forefront of our tree planting and woodland management ambitions and a really fulfilling role for someone keen to develop their skills, interests and experience to make a positive difference, not just to the Sherborne Estate but to our planet through our effort to capture carbon and mitigate against climate change. Your enthusiasm, pace and passion for your work will shine through in all you do.

What you'll be doing

You'll have a passion for wildlife and conservation, especially trees and woodlands. You’ll be able to deliver quality engagement, build positive relationships and always work safely and in line with compliance. You’ll work closely with the ranger team and ensure that high standards of presentation are upheld.

You will play a lead role in the physical delivery of an exciting landscape restoration project focussing on tree planting in the Grade I-listed Lodge Park to a plan produced by Charles Bridgeman in 1725. You’ll help to manage the existing trees through a programme of maintenance work, including tree safety inspections, as well as being the key role for trees, woodland and hedgerows across the estate. You’ll take pride in delivering benefits for nature and climate and helping the National Trust realise its ambition to plant 20 million trees by 2030.

Part of the role is communicating the great work we do to visitors, communities and funders so you’ll contribute to our interpretation and engagement activities too. You’ll deliver across all these areas through working with contractors and volunteers as well as fostering great relationships with tenant farmers. It's a positive and energetic atmosphere and we rely on great team-working to deliver on our priorities and ambitious projects. You will be crucial in helping your team achieve great things.

Who we're looking for

We’d love to hear from you if you’re:

• experienced in practical conservation work, especially in relation to the establishment and aftercare of trees

• have a passion for nature, heritage and the outdoors

• a great communicator, able to engage with visitors to ensure they understand the value of your work

• enthusiastic with a willingness to learn. A ‘can do, will do’ person

• able to work safely, producing and using risk assessments, and following guidance and safety procedures

• competent in the use of machinery and equipment, holding the relevant certificates required or prepared to work towards these (chainsaw, pole saw, tractor, trailer, First Aid at Work + Forestry, tree safety assessment)

• a driver with a full UK driving licence and preferably with trailer licence or experience

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.

• Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary

• Season ticket loan
