Job overview

Pharmacy Technician – Accuracy Checker to join our Pharmacy Department. This is a full time, permanent role. You will be based at Whiston or St Helens site, with automated dispensing systems in place and a reputation for being a rewarding place to work. You will contribute through suggestions, working groups, projects and audits.

You will be part of a team across two sites (Whiston and St Helens) with a combined workforce of over 100 staff in the dispensaries and related services.


Main duties of the job

* Provide a dispensing service to Trust patients, including taking medication histories, counselling patients, and accuracy checking of all medications supplied to patients.
* Perform medicines reconciliation on wards, assess patients’ own medicines, ensure timely discharges, and counsel patients on discharge.
* Accuracy check prescriptions in the dispensary on a rota basis.
* Carry out dispensing activities for TTOs, controlled drugs, clinical trials, cytotoxic and unlicensed medicines as required.
* Be responsible for stock control of dispensed medicines on wards, departments and clinics; assist in stock control of non-dispensed medicines on wards.
* Liaise with medical staff, pharmacists, ward staff, GP practices, and other bodies regarding medication issues.
* Order stocks and special line items to fulfil prescriptions and provide individual dose dispensing and blister packing where needed.
* Assist in preparation and final accuracy checks of emergency and resuscitation cartons.
* Participate in recruitment activities and in a rota that supports a seven-day service; include weekend, bank holiday and on-call rotas as required.


Clinical, professional and administrative responsibilities

* Maintain registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council and ongoing professional development as required by the GPhC.
* Attend study days and training as necessary to maintain competency.
* Maintain security and safe storage of medicines in line with policies and legal requirements.
* Ensure compliance with legal requirements for purchasing, supplying, storing, and disposing of drugs across the Trust.
* Assist in prescription processing and accurate data input into the pharmacy computer system for labeling, ordering and stock control.
* Organise daily workload and provide guidance to other pharmacy staff as needed.


Teaching and training

* Assist in training and development of all staff in dispensing systems and discharge processes.
* Support ATOs and pre-registration trainees, and maintain training records.


Financial, research and audit responsibilities

* Contribute to an efficient and cost-effective service.
* Carry out and assist in audits and research projects to improve service provision.


Person specification


Qualifications

* BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Principles and Practices for Pharmacy Technicians or GPhC-recognised equivalent.
* BTEC professional diploma in dispensing checking or GPhC-recognised equivalent meeting the APTUK standard for accuracy checking (1000-item log with checking test). The APTUK standard must be met within 3 months of starting.
* Registered as a practising Pharmacy Technician with the GPhC.


Knowledge and experience

* Significant post-qualification experience in a pharmaceutical environment.
* Experience in dispensing for discharge and medicines management.
* Experience using the JAC pharmacy computer system.
* Knowledge of LEAN principles.


Skills

* Ability to motivate team performance and achieve objectives.
* Good verbal communication skills; able to communicate with patients, staff and other professionals.
* Ability to concentrate under pressure and work accurately with good attention to detail.
* Strong time management and organisational skills.


Other

* Ability to participate in the department’s evening and weekend rota for seven-day working.
* Supportive of colleagues at all grades.
