Job Description
The Temporary Works Lead is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the design and safe execution of all temporary works within the yard. This includes structures and systems required during building, repair, or maintenance phases that are not part of the permanent build or facility.
Responsibilities
* Be the Temporary Works Lead (TWL) in line with best practices (e.g., BS 5975).
* Develop and implement the Temporary Works Procedure for yard operations.
* Maintain the Temporary Works Register for all ongoing projects.
* Review and approve temporary works designs (scaffolding, staging, lifting frames, supports, access platforms).
* Coordinate with production, structural engineers, and subcontractors.
* Ensure all designs meet structural and safety standards.
* Integrate temporary works into construction and repair schedules.
* Liaise with production teams and project managers.
* Ensure sequencing avoids clashes with critical yard operations.
* Ensure temporary works are installed, inspected, maintained, and dismantled safely.
* Conduct regular site inspections and audits.
* Verify compliance with method statements and risk assessments.
Adherence & Approvals
* Health & safety adherence:
o Health & Safety regulations (e.g., CDM Regulations in the UK)
o Shipyard safety standards
o Lifting operations and confined space requirements
* Lead incident investigations related to temporary works.
* Approve design briefs, lifting plans & method statements, inspection and handover certificates, and maintain records of inspections, permits, and approvals.
Qualifications
* Strong knowledge of BS 5975.
* Leadership and coordination skills.
* Technical design review capability.
* Strong communication across multidisciplinary teams.
* Problem‑solving in complex, high‑risk environments.
* Attention to safety and compliance.
* Ability to guide, mentor and develop a team, with awareness of employment legislation and best practice regarding processes, wellbeing, and equal opportunities.
* Degree or HNC/HND in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering.
* Formal Temporary Works training (e.g., TWC certification).
* Experience in heavy engineering environments.
* Familiarity with lifting operations (LOLER) and risk management.
