Overview
Senior / Principal Mechanical Engineer - Nuclear (Civil & Defence) role at AtkinsRéalis. Based in the UK, the role involves leading and managing a diverse range of complex mechanical engineering projects within the Reactor Operations team, with opportunities to work within AtkinsRéalis design teams or embedded with clients on major programmes.
You will have the opportunity to apply your existing skills and develop new ones across a wide range of projects across the UK nuclear industry. In Reactor Operations, your core work will involve leading the design and substantiation of mechanical equipment to the highest standards of safety, quality and efficiency, to enable the continued operation and life extension of the UK fleet of nuclear power stations and nuclear-powered submarines. Our team also supports Power New Build, including Hinkley Point C, Sizewell C, Small Modular Reactors and Fusion Energy reactors, as well as Decommissioning projects such as Sellafield and other UK nuclear sites.
Your Responsibilities
* Leading on the delivery of a wide range of mechanical engineering projects.
* Provide technical expertise and guidance to project teams.
* Perform feasibility and optioneering studies to generate design solutions.
* Develop engineering solutions through the design lifecycle: Concept, Scheme, Detailed Design and Construction.
* Support development of bids and value propositions.
* Manage project budgets, schedules and resources to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.
* Engage with and influence stakeholders at all levels, building strong, lasting relationships.
* Support and develop junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.
What You Can Bring (Qualifications)
* Degree-qualified mechanical engineer, or other relevant qualification.
* Chartered or Incorporated with a relevant professional institute (e.g., IMechE).
* Experience leading the design and/or substantiation of mechanical equipment (e.g., mechanical handling systems, machinery, test rigs, or components).
* Experience using engineering software for 3D CAD, drawings, calculations and Finite Element Analysis.
* Experience with design codes, standards and regulations typical for the engineering industry (e.g., ASME, Eurocodes, BS EN13001, RCC-M, machinery directive, HS&E legislation).
* Experience in hazard/fault identification studies (e.g., ERICPD, HAZOP, HAZAN, FMEA).
* Experience writing, checking, reviewing and approving technical reports and documentation (design calculations, basis of design, safety case reports).
* Ability to exercise judgement when managing uncertainty and technical risk.
* Entrepreneurial mindset with ability to identify opportunities, win work and contribute to growth.
* Previous experience in the UK nuclear defence industry.
Security Clearance
This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. The vetting process is delivered by United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV) and may require candidates to provide proof of UK residency of 5 years or longer.
