The Opportunity
We are seeking a Platform Engineer (DevEx) to sit within the Platform Engineering team of ~20 people, focused on improving how engineers build, test, and ship software. The goal is to reduce friction across the development lifecycle and enable engineering teams to work more effectively. The role reports directly to the Director of Engineering (N-2 to CTO).
This is a newly created, hands-on IC position - ideal for someone who wants to establish a DevEx practice from the ground up and collaborate closely with engineering leadership to shape the roadmap.
Performance in this role will be measured through improvements in developer productivity, reduced time-to-productivity for new joiners or team movers, faster CI/CD feedback cycles, and positive sentiment from the engineering organisation.
What You Will Do
* Evaluate, integrate, and champion developer tooling - with a particular focus on AI-assisted development. Run enablement sessions, monitor adoption, and assess real-world productivity impact of emerging tools.
* Create and maintain starter templates and scaffolding that allow teams to bootstrap new projects quickly while following consistent engineering standards.
* Standardise and improve the local development setup across teams - covering environment configuration, local services, and test data — to shorten onboarding and iteration cycles.
* Partner with infrastructure and cloud teams to abstract operational complexity away from product engineers.
* Assess CI/CD pipelines and software delivery processes, recommending and implementing improvements to reduce build and test feedback times.
* Establish and track engineering productivity metrics such as build duration, deployment cadence, and pipeline reliability to surface systemic issues and quantify progress.
* Support teams in maintaining high-quality pipelines and test suites that deliver strong release confidence.
* Build and maintain internal tooling - including CLIs, automations, and shared libraries - that streamline day-to-day engineering workflows.
* Run regular feedback sessions and user research with engineering teams to surface pain points and inform priorities.
* Improve the quality and discoverability of internal engineering documentation to accelerate onboarding and reduce knowledge gaps.
Tech Environment
* Developer tooling: AI-assisted IDEs and code generation tools, JetBrains suite
* CI/CD: Self-hosted GitLab (Premium tier)
* Languages: Go, TypeScript, with API frameworks and message queuing
* Infrastructure: Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker, AWS, configuration management on Linux
* Engineering metrics: DORA-aligned tooling
What You Bring
* 4+ years in Software Engineering, Developer Experience, or Platform Engineering
* Strong skills in at least one modern systems or scripting language - Go is strongly preferred
* Practical experience embedding generative AI tools into engineering workflows
* Awareness of the risks and limitations of LLMs including hallucination, prompt injection, and context constraints
* Solid understanding of modern software delivery practices including Git-based workflows, CI/CD, and containerisation
* A product-oriented mindset where internal engineers are the customer - strong empathy for what helps and what hinders developer productivity
* Clear written communication, including documentation that is accessible to both humans and AI tools
* Comfort working in ambiguous, fast-evolving environments where you define the standards
* Awareness of cloud cost optimisation and its role in infrastructure decisions
Nice to Have
* Experience designing or coordinating autonomous agent workflows for multi-step engineering tasks
* Familiarity with internal developer portals such as Backstage or equivalent
