Please note: whilst this post is advertised as a General Porter position, this vacancy is specifically within our Waste Team. This is an important operational role supporting the safe movement and management of waste services across the hospital, contributing directly to infection prevention, site safety and the smooth running of hospital operations. We are currently recruiting General Porters to work within the team to provide a comprehensive Portering service of a high standard across the Weston General Hospital. This is a great opportunity to work in our patient friendly hospital. This particular shift pattern will bemoving and managing waste on a daily basis, covering Monday - Friday.
Shift Pattern
* Week 1 – 8am to 4pm
* Week 2 – 12pm to 8pm
Responsibilities
* Providing a portering and messenger service including the transfer of patients and visitors between wards and departments.
* Movement and management of waste within Weston Hospital.
* Maintaining confidentiality and attending trust training.
* Responding to emergency bleeps including cardiac arrest, fire and major trauma.
* Assist with other tasks as and when required.
Qualifications
* Essential: Sound secondary education
* Desirable: NVQ in Support Services in Health Care (if not held must gain certificate within 12 months)
Skills
* Demonstrate an understanding of customer care and the role of a hospital porter.
* Demonstrate the ability to care for others.
* Be able to make sound judgement on priority tasks under times of pressure and when workload can be extremely high.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
* Pleasant and friendly personality.
* Ability to use own initiative.
* Understanding of the need to deal with patients, parents and staff in a helpful and supportive manner, demonstrate legible written documentation.
* Be efficient at delegating and prioritising workload through use of telephone, porter trace system, bleep and two-way radio system.
* Fitness to work safely in a clinical environment dealing with heavy and unpredictable loads.

* Previous experience of hospital portering (desirable).
