Position: Sessional Optometrist

What You Bring
To be part of SeeAbility’s NHS England commissioned Special School’s Eye Care team in a London school or schools. You will be responsible for regular visits to the same school(s) with a Dispensing Optician partner during school term times only. SeeAbility Special Schools Eye Care team training will be provided to all successful applicants.
Your Responsibilities
* Provide specialist eye care and eye care and vision information in schools to meet NHS England’s Special School Eye Care Service Specification
* Undertake SeeAbility Special Schools Eye Care Team training
* Communicate appropriately and confidently with children who have complex needs
* Communicate sensitive information to patients’ relatives or carers, with consideration of disability barriers
* Manage your caseload of patients using evidence-based practice
* Make independent complex clinical decisions when opinions may differ
* Liaise with parents and schools on your caseload (secure NHS mail; GDPR compliance). Support available from SeeAbility’s Special Schools Service Manager and administrators
* Refer children needing spectacle correction to the SeeAbility Dispensing Optician and provide dispensing services when required
* Prescribe and advise on the use of eye drops
* Demonstrate high skill in using complex diagnostic equipment
* Foster interdisciplinary cooperation with other agencies to ensure high-quality care
* Involve other healthcare professionals as appropriate (e.g., orthoptists, GPs, ophthalmologists, paediatricians, S&L therapists, OTs, physiotherapists)
* Ensure accurate documentation of all interactions; produce reports for parents, staff and professionals within NHS guidelines (within 5 working days, unless exceptional circumstances)
* Share clinical information securely with appropriate parties
* Refer to ophthalmologists, orthoptists or GPs as clinically indicated
* Transport notes, laptop and testing equipment between sites as required
* Be accountable for own actions; act with initiative in patient care within health policies
* Maintain a safe, clean environment and follow infection control procedures
* Maintain professional development and participate in training; mentor new team members as needed
* Attend at least 2 SeeAbility team meetings per year
* Report incidents, accidents or near misses; participate in risk assessments
* Deliver training sessions to assigned schools annually
* Engage in evidence-based practice and clinical audit
* Maintain IT systems knowledge and ensure records comply with information governance
* Support the themes, values and goals outlined in the UK Vision Strategy
* Ensure timely uploading of records and reports to shared information systems
* Stay up to date on developments in eye health and learning disability; comply with relevant legislation and policy
* Promote diversity and adhere to SeeAbility’s Code of Conduct
* Maintain confidentiality and safeguarding procedures
* Undertake other duties commensurate with the role as directed by the Special Schools Service Manager and Clinical Lead
