Hydrometry & Telemetry Field Officer - 31723
Join our Brampton/Ely based Hydrometry & Telemetry Team as a Hydrometric Officer. This is a dynamic, predominantly field-based role with occasional office-based responsibilities. You’ll be outdoors throughout the year, including in challenging weather conditions, so resilience and adaptability are key. Operating across Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, and parts of Norfolk, you’ll be responsible for collecting, validating, and delivering high-quality scientific data on rainfall, river flows and levels, and groundwater. This data supports internal teams and external stakeholders in making informed environmental decisions.
Responsibilities
* Collect hydrometric data from numerous sites across the area
* Conduct flow gauging at sites to support data validation and incident response
* Report on asset conditions, identifying issues that may affect data quality
* Undertake fieldwork and travel to local offices and national meetings as required
* Develop and maintain strong working relationships with other team members and support them to achieve team objectives
Experience / Skills Required
* Essential:
o Ability to work independently
o Good communication skills
o Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
o Comfortable working near and in water
o A full UK driving licence
* Helpful but not essential:
o Experience in collecting and managing data
o Experience with environmental monitoring instrumentation, particularly in river and tidal settings
o An awareness of field-based health and safety

The Team & Role
The Hydrometry & Telemetry Team is part of the Monitoring Department within Local Operations. We manage the Environment Agency’s field telemetry equipment and hydrometric network. Our core responsibility is to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of the data we collect, which underpins flood forecasting and water resource management. Our goal is to deliver accurate, timely information that meets customer needs.
Contact and Additional Information
This is a field-based role requiring travel to remote sites across Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire using a badge-enabled fleet vehicle. Travel to Brampton and Ely offices is expected from time to time. Responding to incidents is a central part of the role and training will be provided. The role does NOT qualify for skilled worker sponsorship. Interviews are planned for the week commencing 13 October, in Ely, but may be subject to change.
