Overview
Wirral Council is seeking a highly experienced Workshop Manager to lead our Engineering Workshops within the Parks & Countryside service. This is a pivotal leadership role responsible for the maintenance, repair, and replacement of a diverse fleet of machinery, equipment, and vehicles. The role focuses on delivering workshop services to the highest standards of safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness, and on driving continuous improvement and strategic asset investment.
This is a hands-on leadership position that requires technical expertise, strong management skills, and a commitment to operational excellence. You will lead technical projects, manage budgets, collaborate with internal teams and external contractors, and support service transformation across the Parks & Countryside estate. You will also develop the workforce, ensure health and safety compliance, and utilise digital tools for diagnostics, reporting, and asset tracking to support informed decision-making and improved service efficiency.
About The Candidate
We are looking for a candidate with a proven track record in managing engineering workshops, ideally within horticultural or agricultural environments. You will demonstrate strong leadership capabilities to motivate, develop, and support a high-performing technical team, and bring advanced mechanical knowledge with a clear commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills are essential to build effective working relationships across a wide range of partners while adopting a proactive, solutions-focused approach to service delivery and problem-solving. A qualification in mechanical engineering at NVQ Level 5 or equivalent is essential. Additional qualifications in leadership, health and safety (such as IOSH or NEBOSH), or project management (such as PRINCE2 or ILM) are highly desirable. Experience with health and safety legislation (PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, and vibration regulations) is essential to ensure compliance and a safe working environment.
Interviews and Traineeships
Interviews are planned for mid to late October 2025. If your skills, knowledge, or experience differ from what is listed and you believe you can bring value to the role, we may consider a traineeship depending on the candidate pool.
