Flexible Working: We offer a strong work-life balance and support full time, part time, compressed and flexible hours. Due to the nature of the role, homeworking will not be possible.
About Us
GCHQ is an Intelligence, cyber and security agency with a mission to keep the UK safe. We use cutting-edge technology, ingenuity, and partnerships to identify, analyze, and disrupt threats. Working with our intelligence partners MI5 and MI6, we protect the UK from terrorism, cyber-attacks, and espionage. At GCHQ, you’ll do varied and fascinating work in a supportive and inclusive environment that emphasizes teamwork.
For those passionate about problem-solving, innovative ideas, and delivering creative solutions to complex challenges, the Computer Network Exploitation role offers unique and varied work that is far from mundane.
We’re offering entry-level roles, which are an excellent way to learn and develop within the wider Computer Network Exploitation (CNE) team at GCHQ. Our current locations are Gloucestershire and Samlesbury.
The Roles
In CNE, we have the scope to do things that wouldn’t be possible elsewhere. You’ll be on the front line of our efforts to pursue targets and complete our mission. Using bespoke technology and under strict legal safeguards, we legally infiltrate the computers of terrorists and criminals to discover and disrupt their plans. This work is fascinating and challenging, varying depending on the role.
Exploit/Implant Developers
This role involves working at a deep technical level to find weaknesses in our targets’ networks and software, then creating tooling and bespoke solutions to exploit these weaknesses. As an Implant Developer, you’ll learn how to create covert software that provides enduring access and collection capabilities, leveraging your deep platform knowledge and research.
Success in this role requires a strong technical aptitude, including proficiency in multiple programming languages, and a genuine interest in computer networking, reverse engineering, and cybersecurity.
Operators
As an Operator, you’ll be on the front line of our efforts to pursue targets and complete our mission. This role involves working collaboratively with Exploit Developers and Intelligence Analysts to understand our mission. You’ll utilize various technical tools and tradecraft, gaining insights into the efforts involved in safeguarding the country. While programming experience and networking knowledge are not mandatory, an aptitude for technology and a willingness to learn are important.
During your interview, we’ll discuss your skills and interests to find the best role match, contingent upon business needs and your meeting the necessary criteria. Based on your experience and proficiency, we will decide whether to offer you an Operator or Developer position.
Training and Development
We invest in your skills and adapt to your preferred learning style. If you’re passionate about technology and eager to learn, we’ll provide the training, development, and support needed to succeed. This includes bespoke internal courses, mentoring, and opportunities for professional qualifications. We also offer a bursary scheme for a master’s or top-up degree.
The skills you develop could span complex operational infrastructure, software development, and personal growth to support your career.
From day one, you’ll have access to mentors and subject matter experts, helping you create a personalized development and career plan.
Rewards and Benefits
You’ll start with a salary of £34,663, plus a recruitment bonus of £3,000 and a specialist skills payment of £4,000 (split into two payments: £3,500 on arrival and £3,500 after probation). Additional benefits include:
• 25 days annual leave, increasing to 30 days after 5 years, plus 10.5 days public and privilege holidays
• Flexible working arrangements
• Employee recognition schemes
• Excellent pension scheme
• Interest-free season ticket loan
• Cycle to work scheme
• On-site facilities such as a restaurant and coffee bar
• Paid parental and adoption leave
• Opportunities for skills advancement payments, subject to assessment

At GCHQ, diversity and inclusion are vital to our mission. We seek a workforce that reflects society, welcoming applications from all backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions.
