Medical Physics employs 135 staff (35 scientists and 100 technical staff), providing a variety of scientific and clinical services to the Trust.
The Department of Medical Physics is divided into 6 sections, each managed by a Section Head responsible to the Scientific Director. The Clinical Engineering Section is divided into three groups – Medical Device Management (MDM), Medical Device Innovation (MDI), and Medical Device Healthcare Projects (MDHP).
Medical Device Management (MDM) is the largest group with over 60 staff. This section provides a fully comprehensive, highly-specialised medical device maintenance and management service to the Trust.
MDM strategically plans this highly specialised medical device management service at an organisational level. Medical device types range from basic monitoring devices to highly complex imaging and therapy equipment such as MRI scanners, lasers, gamma cameras, and life support devices.
The budget of this section is £8.0 million, with approximately £4 million for the section's running costs (90% of medical devices are maintained in-house) and approximately £4 million for external maintenance contract management.
